Naturally, the Wizarding World holds a special place in many hearts, and there will always be fans eager for any bite of the franchise they can savor. However, the majority seemed apprehensive.

The highly acclaimed Harry Potter movie series is often considered among the top book-to-screen adaptations, with its cast embodying the beloved characters vividly in viewers’ minds. With such a remarkable portrayal already established, it seems challenging to justify a new series and find actors who could bring fresh energy to these well-established characters. However, recent announcements about casting for some Hogwarts adult characters have sparked hope that they might be planning something even more enchanting than we had envisioned.

Nick Frost Is the Perfect Hagrid

Occasionally, a casting decision feels just right, and it’s hard to deny that thought. Nick Frost being cast as Hagrid would be one such instance where the pieces seem to fit perfectly. Chances are you know Nick Frost from his side-splittingly funny partnership with Simon Pegg in the Cornetto Trilogy – a series of comedic masterpieces consisting of Shaun of the Dead, The World’s End, and Hot Fuzz. Born and bred in London, Frost is not only an accomplished actor but also a talented screenwriter, having made a name for himself over several decades in comedy, both alongside Pegg and independently.

Regardless of his height (apologies for mentioning, Nick), he carries an unmistakable aura reminiscent of Hagrid. It’s hard to pinpoint the reason, but it seems fitting that he would grow a beard and wear stilts. Following in the footsteps of the late, great Robbie Coltrane in the films won’t be an easy feat, and that’s precisely why someone with Nick Frost’s unique charm is needed to give Hagrid a fresh take while preserving the beloved character of our favorite giant. It feels as if Nick Frost as Hagrid was long overdue!

These Other Choices Are Not Half-Bad, Either!

Back in February 2025, it was one of the initial announcements that John Lithgow would be taking on the role of Headmaster Albus Dumbledore. With six Emmys, two Golden Globes, and a Tony under his belt, Lithgow is no stranger to high-caliber acting; he recently starred in the Oscar-winning film “Conclave.” Given his impressive credentials, Lithgow appears to be an ideal fit for Dumbledore. However, let’s not forget that he has some big shoes to fill following the exceptional performances by Michael Gambon and Richard Harris.

To date, all of the cast selections have been intriguing. Notably, Janet McTeer, renowned from “Ozark,” has been announced to appear on the series as McGonagall, a character that’s garnered increased interest following the demise of the legendary Dame Maggie Smith last year. On the other hand, Paapa Essedieu is set to portray Severus Snape, the master potioner and enigmatic head of Slytherin House. Of course, Alan Rickman, who originally played Snape, has also passed away. In this new adaptation, Essedieu, known for his work on the West End stage and in HBO’s “I May Destroy You,” will break new ground by becoming the first Black actor to play Severus Snape.

In the upcoming series, Luke Thallon is set to portray Quirinus Quirrell, a professor of dark arts concealing a hidden truth (previously played by Ian Hart). Notably, Paul Whitehouse has been cast as the Hogwarts caretaker, Filch. Known for his work in British comedy, particularly the sketch show “The Fast Show,” Whitehouse joins an interesting trend of comedic talent in this production. This could suggest that the new series may aim to distinguish itself from the films by adopting a more humorous approach.

What Else Is in Store?

Even though we’re yet to find out who will join Rupert Grint and Emma Watson in their iconic trio, rest assured that the casting team is working diligently as we speak or read this. Mark Mylod, the executive producer, mentioned they screen between 500 to 1000 kids daily, searching for that perfect fit. Since HBO plans a ten-year series, with each season based on a different book, it’s likely we’ll grow up watching these young actors unfold their characters. It’s crucial that the casting team takes as much time as needed to find the ideal candidates.

Francesca Gardiner takes on the role as the head producer, while director Mark Mylod is set to direct multiple episodes and serve as an executive producer. Key details such as the show’s title and production timeline remain confidential, but filming is expected to commence in summer 2025 with a projected release date in 2026.
