Nicholas Cage Says He Got ‘Stuck in the Rip Tide’ and ‘Could Have Died’ While Training for ‘The Surfer’: ‘I’ve Been Pounded to Smithereens’

In preparation for his latest psychological thriller “The Surfer,” Nicholas Cage almost had an encounter with a shark. The movie, currently playing in cinemas, sees Cage play an unnamed businessman trying to purchase his childhood home in Australia, but finds it guarded by a group of enigmatic thugs who turn his life into a living hell.

During a conversation with Entertainment Weekly, Cage admitted that his surfing training turned out to be riskier than he initially thought.

In a candid statement, Cage shared his experiences which included factors such as weather and shark sightings, among other things. He admitted, surprisingly, that despite having surfed before, each time he tried surfing, he was left bruised and battered. “I went surfing at Sunset Beach,” he said, “and when I was trying to learn, my instructor provided me with a shortboard. I asked him, ‘Could I please have a longboard instead?'”

Cage revealed that he had encountered factors like weather conditions and shark reports while surfing, admitting that every time he attempted surfing, he was left severely beaten up. He surfed at Sunset Beach and when learning, his teacher gave him a shortboard. However, he requested for a longboard instead.)

Despite using a longboard, the waves managed to overpower Cage. “I was thrashed and ended up being trapped in a strong current known as rip tide,” he explains, mimicking the vertical position of his board with his hands. He adds, “They said they saw my board, which they referred to as ‘tombstone’ because it stuck straight up out of the water like a triangle.

As I was flipping through the air while ascending, I came close to meeting my end,” Cage noted. “With a child in tow now, I’m unsure if I still wish to take on such risks.

In “The Surfer” movie, directed by Lorcan Finnegan and written by Thomas Martin, the protagonist (Cage) struggles significantly. Despite not being a natural surfer, he expresses a possible desire to try again in the future. His ultimate aim is to retire, enjoy surfing, drink red wine, and savor spaghetti.
