As a seasoned cinephile with decades of movie-watching under my belt, I can confidently say that the National Film Development Corporation’s (NFDC) Film Bazaar market is shaping up to be a game-changer in the global film industry. The expansion into series development and the robust registrations ahead of its 2024 edition are testaments to this.
The Market segment of India’s National Film Development Corporation (NFDC), known as Film Bazaar, is growing to include television series production and has received a high number of registrations before its 2024 event. This market will coincide with the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) that takes place in Goa.
The market has chosen multiple collaborative projects for production, after introducing a streaming award for films at IFFI last year. As Prithul Kumar, managing director of NFDC and joint secretary at India’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, stated to EbMaster, “We received a significant number of applications, approximately 50 in total, for the series.
2021’s event has welcomed Jerome Paillard as an advisor, who previously oversaw the Cannes Film Market. As Kumar stated, “He’s been instrumental in shaping most aspects – he’s had control over mentors, juries, and the list of influential distributors, marketing agents, and producers hailing from around the globe. His extensive experience with Cannes is a significant advantage, as his connections ensure the right individuals attend the market and the projects are showcased effectively.
As a movie enthusiast, I’ve noticed an exciting trend unfolding. Major cities in India, such as Chennai, Hyderabad, Delhi, and Mumbai, are becoming hubs for wooing producers from the country’s regional film industries. The aim? To bring Indian content to global screens.
Film Bazaar’s renowned Knowledge Series will host discussions covering various topics, such as festival planning strategies led by Christian Jeune from Cannes, methods for acquiring streaming content, and the role of artificial intelligence in movie production.
At the ongoing IFFI, fresh competitive categories have been introduced, such as the Indian Debut Director award, which attracted over 100 submissions. As Kumar pointed out, out of the six films chosen for works-in-progress [at the Film Bazaar], half are from first-time filmmakers.
The program will also highlight “From Down Under,” featuring Australian films, as our primary focus is on Australia. Moreover, we’ve expanded our restored classics section, showcasing timeless gems like the 1919 silent film “Kaliya Mardan” with live orchestra, Amitabh Bachchan’s debut “Saat Hindustani” (1969), and Satyajit Ray’s “Seemabaddha” (1971).
The festival is emphasizing its dedication towards emerging filmmakers by inviting 400 film school students from various parts of India, offering assistance for travel and lodging expenses. This initiative, known as “Creative Minds of Tomorrow,” was first launched during India’s 75th year of independence and is now being extended to nurture an additional 100 young talents.
Film Bazaar runs Nov. 20-24, while IFFI takes place Nov. 20-28 in Goa, India.
