After nearly 24 years, Nexus Mods – a leading platform for PC gaming modifications – is transitioning to new management, as revealed by its founder, Robin Scott (also known as DarkOne), without disclosing the identities of the new owners.
In a recent post on Nexus Mods, Scott fails to disclose the identities of the new proprietors. Instead, he mentions that it took numerous rounds of discussions and personal encounters to locate an owner who would uphold the complex nuances of both Nexus Mods as a corporation and the broader modding community. The new owners emphasize their commitment to “ensuring the site’s longevity rather than altering its values or objectives,” as expressed by Scott, and they assure that the platform will remain “community-centric and author-oriented.
Indeed, the control over Nexus Mods has been passed on, but let me clarify this isn’t a typical corporate departure or under-the-table transaction, Scott explained. Instead, it’s about prioritizing self-care – something he should have done years ago. It’s about reclaiming personal space and relinquishing the notion that every task and responsibility needs to be handled single-handedly by him.
Scott withdrew from managing the site he established due to burnout and health concerns. He revealed that maintaining the website since 2001 and being constantly available had led to chronic anxiety and health problems related to stress. Although the site originated from his personal enthusiasm for The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, it eventually evolved into a venture that monopolized his life.
Scott shared that his experience has been both fulfilling yet challenging, occasionally disorganized, frequently tiring, and consistently intimate. At some point, he admitted he neglected to take a moment to relax or get enough sleep. The predicament of managing a significant social media platform, which never takes a break!
Scott acknowledged that as he experienced burnout and fatigue, it started impacting the site and the Nexus Mods team negatively. This led him to understand that for the best interests of Nexus Mods, a change was necessary – specifically, stepping down and allowing fresh leadership to take over.
Despite no longer being the owner, Scott will continue to play a significant role in shaping the broader direction of the site, but won’t have to approve every minor detail. In terms of changes, it appears they won’t be substantial, as per Scott’s statement. He mentioned that he had been gradually relinquishing responsibilities and these structural modifications to the company ownership are more about ensuring the right individuals are at the helm to steer the site forward into the future.
In the past two decades, modding, particularly through platforms like Nexus Mods, has flourished. Notable role-playing games such as Skyrim, Fallout 4, Cyberpunk 2077, and Baldur’s Gate 3 have thriving modding communities. Websites like Nexus Mods facilitate this process, making it simple for creators to upload their modifications and for PC gamers seeking to enhance their gaming experience to easily discover new content.
