"Next Time we'll make One we'll be really proud of”. Robert De Niro still regrets this Thriller with Al Pacino

As a devoted cinephile with a penchant for the golden age of Hollywood, I can’t help but feel a twinge of nostalgia when reminiscing about the iconic duo, Al Pacino and Robert De Niro. Their on-screen chemistry, particularly in films like “The Godfather Part II” and later in “Heat,” has left an indelible mark on cinema history.

Al Pacino and Robert De Niro are two iconic figures in Hollywood, often recognized as the industry’s brightest stars. Despite their collaboration in Francis Ford Coppola’s “The Godfather Part II,” it was Michael Mann’s “Heat” that provided the unique opportunity for them to share the screen together for the first time.

In a span of thirteen years, they found themselves under the same movie set once more, for Jon Avnet’s “Righteous Kill”. Regrettably, the movie didn’t fare well with critics (boasting just 18% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and a mere 37% approval from audiences), despite the actors’ hopes. Robert De Niro appeared to express remorse over his involvement in this particular project.

Back in 2019, when I sat down with Variety, I openly agreed with the critical reception our film received. You know that premiere we had in Rome? I remember turning to Al Pacino and commenting on the passionate crowd waiting for us and the movie we were about to present.

As a gamer, I expressed my enthusiasm, but shared a thought: “It’d be awesome if they could join us for a movie that truly makes us feel proud and satisfied. Hopefully, the next time around, we can pick one that really resonates with us.”

Fans might recall that Robert De Niro fulfilled his pledge after a decade had passed. In Martin Scorsese’s movie, “The Irishman,” they finally shared the screen together once more. This film garnered praise from both audiences and critics and received ten Oscar nominations.

In a nutshell, “Righteous Kill” is about two New York City detectives nearing retirement who find themselves investigating a murder that might be linked to an old case they had closed years ago. As they delve deeper into this case, they begin to doubt if the right person was indeed punished for the earlier crimes.
