Next Like A Dragon Is A Pirate Adventure Starring Starring Majima

As a die-hard Yakuza fan with countless hours invested in the chaotic world of Kamurocho and beyond, I can’t help but be ecstatic about the latest announcement from Sega and Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio. The fact that Goro Majima, the unpredictable and lovable loose cannon, is taking center stage in Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii is nothing short of exhilarating!

Sega and Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio have unveiled the upcoming Like a Dragon title, with fan-favorite character Goro Majima taking center stage. In this new installment titled Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, Majima, who has lost his memory, transforms into a pirate captain on a quest for a legendary treasure. This journey will lead him into confrontations with Hawaiian pirate gangs. The initial trailer doesn’t offer much insight into gameplay mechanics, but it does provide a glimpse of the cast, their voice actors, and a scheduled release date of February 28, 2025.

At the RGG Summit, I learned from producer Ryosuke Horii that this spin-off’s combat design is remarkably distinct from the turn-based RPG battles in the latest mainline games. He shared that our goal was to make it fast-paced and infuse it with the unique charm of Majima. In this new adventure, Majima can switch between two fighting styles, Mad Dog and Sea Dog, showcasing his iconic Yakuza moves and delving into a weapon-centric system that embraces his pirate persona to the fullest.

Beyond this, Majima is also featured in numerous side games, a characteristic that’s become synonymous with Yakuza and Yakuza: Like a Dragon titles. Loyal fans of the series have been treated to an abundance of options lately, as RGG Studio has consistently produced multiple games. Starting from 2020, they’ve launched two mainline installments in the franchise, a remake titled Yakuza: Ishin, and a spin-off named Yakuza: Like a Dragon Gaiden – The Man Who Erased His Name.

In January, the latest addition to the series, titled “Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth,” was released. This installment brings back our current main character, Kasuga Ichiban, who joins forces with Kazuma Kiryu for an adventure in Hawaii. Together, they delve into a significant conspiracy and handle their share of rough encounters.

In Michael Higham’s review for TopMob’s Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, he describes the game as a unique blend of two Yakuza worlds, offering a story that explores life, heritage, and the complexities of our reality, but primarily focusing on themes of atonement and its diverse manifestations. Additionally, he highlights that the RPG systems have been significantly enhanced to deliver an engaging tactical experience in turn-based combat, all while preserving the distinctive essence of the Yakuza series.
