Next Battlefield Game Returns To Modern Setting And Makes Other Key Changes Fans Asked For

As a seasoned gamer who has been through the trenches of numerous Battlefield titles, I must admit my enthusiasm is palpable with the latest revelations from Electronic Arts. The modern-day setting and the promise to rectify some of the divisive elements in Battlefield 2042 have me feeling like a kid on Christmas morning.

Electronic Arts has unveiled fresh information about the upcoming Battlefield title, disclosing it will take place in contemporary times. Additionally, they’ve mentioned that this new game will abandon elements from Battlefield 2042 which sparked disagreement among players.

Instead of setting their recent games during World War I, World War II, or the future, EA’s new Battlefield game is set in contemporary times, as reported by IGN. The initial concept art (check it out below) shows what seems to be a European city, stretching across land and sea, with a blaze tearing through a nearby forest. The scene appears to be the usual chaotic battlefield that Battlefield fans are accustomed to.

In an exclusive chat with IGN, Vince Zampella shared insights on the upcoming developments for Battlefield, revealing a contemporary backdrop, and hinting at a community-based testing initiative. Dive into the complete interview below. 👇

In the upcoming Battlefield game, we will see a departure from certain aspects of Battlefield 2042 that received widespread criticism from players. Battlefield 2042 introduced maps capable of supporting up to 128 players, which was unprecedented in the series. However, fans found issues with matches feeling sparse, leading to a change back to 64-player matches. The next Battlefield game will likely opt for a player count more similar to what has been seen in previous titles.

Absolutely, having a game with 128 players certainly adds excitement, but using a large number for its own sake doesn’t necessarily enhance the experience. We’re experimenting with what makes the game most enjoyable. Our goal is to create an experience that feels more like traditional Battlefield games. I prefer well-crafted, densely populated play areas over vast, empty spaces. Some of these areas are truly impressive, and I can’t wait for you to see them!

As an ardent Battlefield enthusiast, I too have had my reservations about the introduction of “Specialist” characters in Battlefield 2042, marking a departure from the conventional Class system. However, it’s important to note that Zampella, who joined EA after this decision was implemented, has commended DICE for their innovative approach. Yet, he made it clear that these Specialists, which were ultimately removed from Battlefield 2042 in a post-release update, are not expected to make a comeback.

He mentioned that he wasn’t present during the year 2042, as he couldn’t explain why, but it seemed like the team was experimenting with something fresh. Regarding this attempt, he expressed admiration, acknowledging that not everyone appreciated it. However, he emphasized the importance of trying new things, even if they don’t always succeed. In this case, the specialist class didn’t pan out and won’t be returning, so the developers are refocusing on the core Battlefield classes.

In addition, during the interview, Zampella highlighted that although Call of Duty and Battlefield are rivals, he believes each series provides unique offerings to their respective fan bases.

He stated, “We aren’t aiming to dethrone Call of Duty. Instead, we’re creating a unique experience that truly reflects our style. It’s worth noting that this upcoming Battlefield game might even surpass Call of Duty in sales.

While we’re still at the beginning stages and no official release date has been announced yet, there are rumors suggesting that the upcoming Battlefield game might arrive as early as October 2025. Excitingly, EA has hinted at launching a testing program for this new Battlefield title in 2025, giving fans an opportunity to preview the game before it hits the shelves.

He stated, “Basically, this is the essential part: we need to regain the support and trust of the community.” As for the nature of our upcoming endeavor, whether it’s an open or closed beta, or some other kind of trial, that hasn’t been decided yet.
