New York’s Metro Theater Gets New Lease on Life as Ira Deutchman-Led Non-Profit Buys Historic Cinema

The Upper West Side Cinema Center, a recently established nonprofit organization, has acquired the Metro Theater in New York City for a sum of $6.9 million.

As a devoted movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that the acquisition of our beloved cinema was made possible by a generous contribution of $3.5 million from Gov. Kathy Hochul, along with an additional $500,000 from the New York State Legislature. Furthermore, private donors also chipped in to make this dream a reality. With a looming January deadline for property acquisition, this grant extended our deadline and enabled us to complete the purchase officially. What a fantastic turn of events for our cherished community cinema!

It’s high time for the cherished Metro Theater to be revitalized, a task that demands brave and resolute leaders,” I noted in a statement. “The Upper West Side community deserves another premier destination for cinema and art, and that’s why I felt honored to intervene by allocating $3.5 million to breathe life into the new Metro Theater. Joining forces with my friend Assembly member Lasher and Senator Hoylman-Sigal, we’re committed to delivering a new cultural cornerstone for Upper West Siders, one that will endure through the test of time.

Under the guidance of president and co-founder Ira Deutchman and Adeline Monsieur, UWS Cinema Center was established with a vision to renovate the Metro Theater into a five-screen art house cinema. The revamped venue will offer screenings of classic films, international movies, and fresh independent projects. Given the recent closure of Lincoln Plaza Cinema in 2018, this endeavor has taken on particular significance.

I’ve been truly amazed by the overwhelming backing for this project, given its uncertain nature when it came to giving funds. To be part of something with such widespread allure is an experience I’ve never encountered before.

After making the purchase, UWS Cinema Center is planning to gather the required funds for constructing the building and renovating the front part of it.
