As a seasoned movie critic with over three decades of experience under my belt, I’ve seen my fair share of films that try to capture the magic and mayhem of television’s most iconic stages. Yet, the trailer for “Saturday Night” has me positively giddy with anticipation.

The upcoming movie about the 90-minute timeframe between the rehearsal and live broadcast of the premiere episode of Saturday Night Live, titled “Saturday Night,” was released today. It features iconic elements such as Don Pardo’s voice, Chevy Chase tumbling down, Dan Aykroyd’s mustache, a cue card that reads “bees,” Lorne Michaels saying, “It doesn’t matter that we’re ready — it matters that it’s 11:30,” smoking, blood, Michael O’Donoghue, characters who seem to be aware of the show’s future mythology and legacy, John Belushi creating a challenging work environment, Gilda Radner crossing her eyes, Rosie Shuster with a Rachel Sennott expression, George Carlin with a Matthew Rhys likeness saying “fuck you,” the Green Goblin, J. Jonah Jameson, and Nicholas Braun (twice). Directed and co-written by Jason Reitman, who later provided several Saturday Night Live cast members with their big break in films, “Saturday Night” will hit theaters on October 11, the same date as the show premiered 49 years ago. To clarify, October 11, 2024, falls on a Friday.
