The beautiful cherry blossoms are blooming, but a popular spot in New York City is already taking steps to protect its trees from damage caused by visitors.
Every April, Roosevelt Island’s beautiful cherry blossoms attract many visitors. However, the blossoms only last for a few days, and recently, people trying to get the perfect photo have been damaging the trees by shaking branches, picking flowers, and even climbing on them.
A volunteer group called the Petal Protectors is now working to protect the trees by intervening when they see anyone potentially causing harm.
Cherry blossom trees have never been safer
According to the Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation, the island welcomes more visitors each spring, attracted by the beautiful cherry blossoms that bloom and draw people from all over New York City and even further away.
In 2025, we started the “Cherry Blossom Petal Protectors” program to care for the Island’s trees and make visiting a more enjoyable and educational experience. Because of the hard work of local volunteers, the program did very well, and RIOC is happy to be continuing it in 2026.
You might be wondering, what do Petal Protectors actually do? They’re volunteers from the local community who patrol popular areas in April and early May to help protect the cherry blossom trees.
Someone admiring the cherry blossoms exclaimed, “It’s the blossom guardian! Thank you for all you do!” You can become a blossom guardian too! 🌸

They won’t arrest anyone for damaging the trees, but their main duties are welcoming visitors, giving out information cards, and kindly asking people to admire the trees without touching them.
Even seemingly minor actions, such as shaking a tree branch, can cause petals to fall prematurely or harm the tree itself.
This is part of a growing pattern: as cherry blossom viewing spots become increasingly popular on social media, places like Japan and Washington D.C. are struggling to cope with the influx of visitors, which threatens these delicate blooms.
