New York Times Asks Court to Dismiss Justin Baldoni’s Defamation Lawsuit

Justin Baldoni is seeking for the federal court to throw out his defamation case against The New York Times, as he believes they conspired with Blake Lively and her public relations team to publish a damaging article that sparked his ongoing legal dispute with her. In the December 21st article titled “‘We Can Bury Anyone’: Inside a Hollywood Smear Machine,” it was disclosed that Lively had filed a civil rights complaint against Baldoni’s conduct as her director and co-star in “It Ends With Us.” Furthermore, the piece included accusations that Baldoni and his representatives intentionally attempted to harm Lively’s reputation as retaliation for expressing concerns about his on-set behavior.

In their statement, The Times alleges that Baldoni, Wayfarer, and their public relations team attempted to involve The Times in their ongoing conflict with Lively. They assert that The Times was merely conducting journalistic activities, reporting on the disagreement between Wayfarer and Lively. In conclusion, The Times asserts that Baldoni and fellow plaintiffs’ lawsuit presents a biased account that has attracted much attention, but The Times should not be part of this dispute.

Danielle Rhoades Ha, representing The New York Times, declared that the court case brought against our newspaper is unwarranted. Blake Lively expressed significant issues regarding her on-set and post-movie treatment, to which we responded appropriately as a news organization by disclosing the complaint she filed with the California Civil Rights Department. Regardless of Eric Baldoni’s ill-advised crusade against The Times – attacking our credibility, attempting to undermine our reporting, and filing a groundless lawsuit – we will not be silenced.

A spokesperson for Baldoni did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Previously this month, Baldoni’s legal team revised their original lawsuit to assert that data from the New York Times’ website indicates they had access to Lively’s civil rights lawsuit at least 11 days prior to their first report. The initial $250 million lawsuit against the Times was lodged on the same day as when Lively and Baldoni’s publicists, along with Wayfarer, were also sued. On January 16th, Wayfarer retaliated with a counterclaim. Two weeks later, they added the New York Times to their list of defendants.

Published during the previous summer, “It Ends With Us” is a drama that follows the story of a florist who finds herself in a tumultuous romance with a neurosurgeon, which unfortunately turns violent.
