A new law in New York will make big social media companies like TikTok and Instagram show warning labels about potential mental health risks. This aims to address features that are designed to keep users scrolling for extended periods.
Okay, so New York’s Governor Hochul just announced something that’s going to affect how I use apps like TikTok and Instagram Reels. Basically, they’re looking closely at features like endless scrolling, videos automatically playing, and those feeds that are decided by algorithms – you know, the stuff that keeps you glued to your phone. This new thing applies to any platform operating in New York state, so it’s a pretty big deal for anyone who uses those apps here.
This law applies to services that use features designed to be habit-forming, like videos that automatically play and pages that never end. These platforms will need to display warnings about the possible effects on the mental health of young people when using these features.
So, I was reading Reuters, and it turns out the state attorney general is the one who can really do something about violations. They can actually take legal action and fine people up to $5,000 for each offense – that’s pretty serious!

According to a recent statement from Governor Hochul’s office, around half of teenagers report that social media negatively impacts how they feel about their bodies. Teens who spend the most time on social media are almost twice as likely to describe their mental health as poor.
The Governor explained that these warnings are meant to work like labels on everyday products. She pointed to warnings on tobacco products about cancer and labels on plastic packaging that warn about choking hazards as good examples of how these will function.
Both California and Minnesota have passed laws with similar goals, and Australia has completely prohibited social media access for anyone under 16.
Major platforms potentially impacted by the New York law include TikTok, Snap, Meta, and Alphabet.
