Amazon is ending support for its online game New World in January 2027, but a leader from the game studio Facepunch, Alistair McFarlane, has jokingly offered to take over the game. He believes that games shouldn’t simply be shut down and forgotten.
Todd McFarlane announced on social media that he’s made a final offer of $25 million to buy New World, stating, “Games should never die.”
Simon Collins-Laflamme, the developer who revived Hytale after acquiring it from Riot, reached out to McFarlane with an offer of assistance. He messaged, “If you need any advice on buying games that have been cancelled, let me know.”
Amazon Games is shutting down New World as part of broader cuts to its online multiplayer game teams. While new players can no longer purchase the game, existing players will be able to continue playing until the game servers are switched off in January 2027.
Whether New World can be revived is still uncertain, but similar situations have happened before. For example, after Riot cancelled Hytale, developer Hypixel bought the rights and recently launched it to great success. Pre-orders alone provided enough funding to continue developing the game for two years.
The online game Anthem, created by BioWare, recently stopped working. However, one of the game’s original creators, Mark Darrah, suggests it might be possible to revive it in some way.
Recent news about games being permanently removed – like Anthem and the upcoming closure of New World – has sparked a conversation about preserving older games. According to Maciej Gołębiewski, the managing director of GOG, while it’s important to talk about game preservation, actually doing it can be complicated.
