New Wheel Of Time Movies & TV Shows Officially Happening After Prime Video’s Cancellation Last Year

Robert Jordan’s epic series, The Wheel of Time, is being reimagined for new audiences with upcoming movies, television shows, and video games.

About a year after Amazon’s Prime Video cancelled its live-action Wheel of Time show, Variety announced that Thomas Vu (from Arcane) and iwot Studios are starting fresh with a new adaptation. Currently, plans are underway for an animated Wheel of Time series, a video game, and animated movies.

Anthony Borquez of Initiate Entertainment is partnering with Rick Selvage and Larry Mondragon, the CEO and COO of iwot, respectively. Selvage and Mondragon previously produced the Prime Video series.

According to Vu, the animated projects aim to attract a younger audience and broaden the reach of the Wheel of Time franchise, going further than the live-action series has so far.

The producer of Arcane shared that he’s very excited about these new projects, believing they offer a great opportunity to create immersive and engaging stories across different platforms. He emphasized the team’s commitment to building truly authentic experiences, and noted that the rich world of The Wheel of Time provides a strong foundation for expanding this franchise.

I believe there’s huge potential to build on The Wheel of Time by creating immersive storytelling experiences that truly feel like part of the world – think interactive adventures and animation. The rich history and detailed worldbuilding give us a strong base for expanding the franchise across many different platforms for years to come.

Selvage commended Vu’s talent for building stories into major, worldwide entertainment brands. He believes Vu is uniquely suited to take the Wheel of Time franchise in exciting new directions.

Thomas is skilled at building compelling stories into major entertainment franchises. His experience combining storytelling with technology and franchise development makes him the perfect person to help expand The Wheel of Time into exciting new experiences. We’re excited to collaborate with Thomas and Anthony as we continue to bring The Wheel of Time to viewers globally.

The new animated movies and shows are planned as completely separate projects from previously announced ones, like the 3D prequel film about the White Tower and the live-action Age of Legends trilogy – though those may not actually happen.

Robert Jordan, the author of the popular Wheel of Time series, released the first two books, The Eye of the World and The Great Hunt, in 1990. He continued to write the series, publishing nine more novels and a prequel over the next fifteen years, until 2005. Sadly, Jordan passed away in 2007 while working on the twelfth book, The Gathering Storm.

After Robert Jordan passed away, his widow asked Brandon Sanderson, the author of Mistborn, to complete the Wheel of Time series. Sanderson used Jordan’s existing writings and notes to finish the story, publishing the final two books, Towers of Midnight in 2010 and A Memory of Light in 2013, after The Gathering Storm.

After eight years in development, Prime Video released the first season of its live-action series based on The Wheel of Time. The show features Rosamund Pike, Daniel Henney, Zoë Robins, Madeleine Madden, Josha Stradowski, Barney Harris, Kate Fleetwood, and Priyanka Bose. Critics generally praised the series, giving it an 81% ‘Fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

I’ve been consistently impressed with The Wheel of Time, and seasons 2 and 3 really delivered. In fact, the most recent season almost hit perfection, scoring a phenomenal 97%! It’s clear the show is continuing to win over critics and audiences alike.

Even though critics liked The Wheel of Time and it received award nominations, Prime Video decided to end the show after three seasons. Declining viewership made the expensive production costs unsustainable.

Details are still scarce about the newly announced animated series, movies, and video game, but the recent cancellation of the Prime Video show hasn’t stopped iwot Studios from expanding the world of The Wheel of Time through other projects.
