New ‘The Office’ Series at Peacock Casts Melvin Gregg, Chelsea Frei, Ramona Young

As a seasoned movie critic who’s spent countless hours immersed in the world of sitcoms, I must admit that the news of a new iteration of “The Office” has me feeling like Dwight Schrute finding a rare beet in his backyard – excited and slightly skeptical. The addition of Melvin Gregg, Chelsea Frei, and Ramona Young to the cast, alongside Domhnall Gleeson and Sabrina Impacciatore, is a promising move, given their impressive resumes.

The new iteration of “The Office” at Peacock is adding three new cast members.

In this upcoming series, I’ll be joining an amazing cast that includes Melvin Gregg from “American Vandal” and “Snowfall,” Chelsea Frei from “Poker Face” and “The Cleaning Lady,” and Ramona Young from “Never Have I Ever” and “Santa Clarita Diet.” Previously announced cast members Domhnall Gleeson and Sabrina Impacciatore will also be part of our ensemble. I can’t wait to work with such talented individuals!

Initial reports about the latest castings emerged in Pacific Palisades, CA, as the actors were following journalists from the Palisadian-Post to familiarize themselves with their characters before taking on their respective roles.

Previously mentioned, the upcoming series isn’t a re-imagining or continuation of “The Office,” but instead, a fresh mockumentary featuring a new cast within the same fictional universe. Unofficially referred to as “The Paper,” the title is yet to be confirmed officially. The official synopsis reveals:

A film crew, known for capturing the essence of Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton office, are currently on the lookout for a fresh topic. They stumble upon a struggling historical newspaper in the Midwest, run by a determined publisher who is attempting to breathe new life into it using volunteer journalists.

Greg Daniels, known for creating the American adaptation of “The Office” on television, is teaming up with Michael Koman to co-create a new show. They both hold the position of executive producers alongside Ricky Gervais, Stephen Merchant (creators of the original British version), Howard Klein, Ben Silverman, and Banijay Americas. Universal Television is the production studio for this project.

In January 2024, Daniels established a writers’ den to kickstart the development of an updated version of the acclaimed NBC mockumentary sitcom that initially aired from 2005 to 2013. This beloved series, known as “The American Office,” was set in Scranton, Penn., and chronicled the daily lives of Dunder Mifflin’s employees. The show featured Steve Carell, Rainn Wilson, John Krasinski, Jenna Fischer, Ed Helms, Mindy Kaling, B.J. Novak, and others. Despite going off the air, its popularity endured, experiencing a resurgence when it became accessible for streaming.
