New StarCraft game reportedly set for BlizzCon 2026 reveal but it’s not what you think

Rumors suggest a new StarCraft game will be revealed at BlizzCon 2026, but it may be different from what fans are anticipating.

StarCraft 2 was released 16 years ago, and it’s been 10 years since the last major update. Even with that time passing, the game is still incredibly popular and considered one of the best real-time strategy series ever made.

As Jason Schreier revealed in his 2024 book, Play Nice, a new game in the series was being created. Information has been scarce since then, but we’ve recently learned some new details.

Jez Corden from Windows Central reports that we’ll see what’s next for StarCraft at BlizzCon 2026, though the upcoming game might not be the real-time strategy game fans are used to.

Next StarCraft game reportedly gearing up for BlizzCon 2026 reveal

In a recent detailed report about Xbox’s plans for the coming year, Corden mentioned the return of BlizzCon, Blizzard’s popular in-person convention, which hasn’t taken place since 2023.

The showcase will feature updates for World of Warcraft and Diablo 4, as well as new content for Overwatch 2. But the biggest news is expected to be the reveal of a new StarCraft game.

Is this new game a sequel to StarCraft, like StarCraft 3? While anything could happen, it doesn’t seem probable. As journalist Jason Schreier reported, a StarCraft game has been in development for several years, but it’s designed as a shooter played from a third-person perspective.

We don’t have much information beyond that. It’s unclear whether the game will have a single-player story mode or mainly focus on multiplayer, and we also don’t know what the actual gameplay will be like.

Longtime StarCraft players will remember this isn’t the first time Blizzard has tried something new with the series. Back in 2002, they revealed StarCraft Ghost, which was planned as a third-person shooter focused on stealth.

For years, there was a lot of speculation about this game, but it was eventually cancelled by 2006. Now, twenty years later, is it finally the right time for a shooter game based on StarCraft – something fans have wanted for a long time?

BlizzCon 2026 is scheduled for September 12–13, where we’re reportedly set to get our answers.
