New ‘Star Trek’ Movie: Release Window, Cast, Story, & Everything We Know About the Upcoming Reboot

It’s been a decade since the last Star Trek movie appeared in cinemas – the longest wait between films in the franchise’s history. Many directors, including Matt Shakman (The Fantastic Four: First Steps), S.J. Clarkson (Madame Web), Noah Hawley (Alien: Earth), and even Quentin Tarantino, were considered for a new installment. Now, Paramount Pictures is finally working on a new Star Trek film, but it won’t be the previously expected Star Trek 4.

For years, Paramount Pictures was working on Star Trek 4, intending to bring back the original reboot cast – including Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto. However, the project has been cancelled. Now, Paramount is planning a complete reboot of the Star Trek film series with a new cast and a fresh creative vision. You can find a detailed history of the abandoned Star Trek 4 project on MovieWeb, and here’s everything we currently know about the next Star Trek movie.

With ‘Star Trek 4’ Canceled, What is the Plot of the Reboot?

Let’s clarify: the next Star Trek movie isn’t a direct sequel to the films with Chris Pine. Paramount Pictures is starting fresh with a complete reboot, meaning it won’t continue the story from the 2009 Star Trek movie, Star Trek Into Darkness, or Star Trek Beyond. It also won’t be a continuation of the Kelvin timeline featuring the Next Generation crew.

The new Star Trek movie will be a completely fresh start, separate from any previous films or TV shows. It won’t use ideas from the cancelled Star Trek 4 plans or recycle old episodes. Everything suggests this next film will be an original story, and likely a reboot that doesn’t follow the established Star Trek timeline.

Paramount’s ‘Star Trek’ Reboot Will Have a New Cast and Crew

Currently, the cast for the next Star Trek movie hasn’t been revealed. However, it’s been confirmed that Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldaña, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, and John Cho won’t be reprising their roles. Paramount Pictures mistakenly announced their return in 2022, as they hadn’t actually finalized contracts with the actors, who were surprised by the news. The studio, now led by David Ellison at Paramount Skydance, has decided to take the franchise in a different direction, despite the original cast’s interest in continuing.

This allows for the introduction of fresh faces. Previous announcements about the reboot indicate that iconic characters like Captain Kirk and Spock won’t be recast, so these new actors will be portraying entirely new characters.

Although the movie doesn’t have actors or a finalized title yet, it does have directors. Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley signed on to direct a new Star Trek film in November 2025. They’re also writing the script and producing it. Previously, Goldstein and Daley directed Vacation, Game Night, and Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, and they co-wrote the screenplay for Spider-Man: Homecoming.

No Release Date Has Been Set

Paramount Pictures hasn’t announced when the next Star Trek movie will come out. It definitely won’t be released in 2026 for the franchise’s 60th anniversary. Since filming hasn’t started and the script isn’t finished, 2028 is the earliest possible release year. Currently, Paramount only has three movies scheduled for 2028: Call of Duty (June 30), a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film (November 17), and a Sonic the Hedgehog spin-off (December 22).

Originally, Paramount planned to release Star Trek 4 on December 22, 2023. But when director Matt Shakman left the project to work on The Fantastic Four: First Steps, the film faced major setbacks and was put on hold indefinitely. It never received a new release date. Now, a complete reboot is in the works, and it needs to accomplish what J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek did in 2009: attract a new generation of fans to the series.
