New Star Trek Animated Series in Development After Prodigy’s End

The subject has a rich background in animated television series, tracing back to 1973 with the premiere of “Star Trek: Animated Series,” which showcased the crew from the 1966 series, voiced by the original cast members. Jumping forward through the years, Paramount+ introduced its second animated series, “Lower Decks,” in 2020, and soon after came the kid-friendly offering, “Prodigy,” in 2021. In 2023, a set of five non-canonical short animations titled “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” were released on the official Star Trek YouTube channel as a mini-series.

The five-season journey of the show ended in 2024, and Netflix has yet to announce any new animated Star Trek content. However, reports suggest that a fresh Star Trek series could be underway, according to recent reports.

A Family-Friendly Trek

The upcoming series, tentatively named “Star Trek: Starfleet Scouts,” is a kid-friendly addition to the Star Trek universe. These animated episodes are expected to stream online, possibly on YouTube.

Information about the upcoming Star Trek series, yet to be officially confirmed by Paramount, remains limited. However, a hint at this new show surfaces from a USPTO filing that mentions “an animated multimedia series planned for distribution across multiple platforms.” The submission’s date is marked as May 1, 2025.

A clue to this project is a casting call for young actors aimed at a YouTube Short Series. According to the details provided, the upcoming Trek series seems to revolve around three friends, roughly aged 8 to 9 years old, as they navigate through school on a planet resembling Earth. The character profiles for Starfleet Scouts describe them as being “cool, humorous, heroic, and genuine.

Additionally, Netflix is not extending the license to air Prodigy’s first two seasons beyond certain dates. The first season will be taken down on June 24, and the second one will disappear by January 1, 2026.
