Fans are being treated to a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the creation process of the chilling fog and terrifying creatures in the Silent Hill 2 remake, thanks to some recently released developer diaries from Bloober Team. These development videos delve into the crafting of the game’s main character, James Sunderland, as well as the thought processes and decisions behind the audio design in the game.
“Creating a game is a journey, and we wanted to share ours with you,” Bloober Team wrote.
In the initial developer blog post titled ‘Getting to Know James Sunderland’, they delve into the hurdles encountered when creating a regular person thrust into extraordinary circumstances. Pablo Poliakov, the Lead Character Artist, explained that while it might be tempting to go overboard with an extravagant design, doing so would overlook the essence of the character, James. He was meant to not be overly stylish or handsome.
In the video, you’ll hear comments from Luke Roberts, who voices James in the remake, and it demonstrates the motion capture technology that brings the characters’ expressive faces and movements to life.
In the second installment titled ‘How Silence Transforms Fog into Fear’, the focus is on the creation process behind the game’s soundtrack and audio mixing. Senior Sound Designer Mikolaj Buszko shared that they extensively played the game in order to capture the emotions it stirred within them, while drawing inspiration from the original sounds for their designs. However, they also chose to incorporate certain sounds directly from the original game.
