Now, Academy Award (Oscar) voters must view every nominated film before casting their votes to ensure fairness. A heated debate arose during the last Oscars regarding voters neglecting to watch all the nominees, particularly “The Brutalist,” a three-and-a-half hour long movie. Despite the 2025 Oscars receiving positive feedback overall, critics voiced their concerns about voters who confessed that they hadn’t watched The Brutalist and other contending films.
Starting from now, members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences must watch every movie they’ve been nominated for if they want to participate in voting for any category. If a voter fails to comply with this rule, they will not be allowed to vote in the final round. This new rule also ensures that all the designated nominees will appear on the final ballot.
