New Resident Evil Movie Will Be “Unlike Any Of The Previous Films,” Director Says

In a recent CinemaCon event, director Zach Cregger of the new Resident Evil film (previously titled Barbarian) shared that his movie is expected to offer something distinctly different from all the other movies in the series.

He seems to be talking about the series of Resident Evil movies directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, which featured his wife Milla Jovovich in the lead roles. These six films earned over a billion dollars worldwide, yet they didn’t receive rave reviews.

Based on IGN’s report, Cregger mentioned that his upcoming Resident Evil film will be inspired by the video game series and will follow a single main character on their journey from point A to point B, taking them further and further into a horrifying underworld.

In most Resident Evil games, a moment arrives where you’re navigating a pitch-black corridor, with only a sliver of health left and seemingly no escape route. Yet, you must push forward because you know that whatever lies ahead in the shadows is not going to be pleasant.

I’m thrilled to share some exciting news! Austin Abrams and I will be sharing the screen in the upcoming Resident Evil film as leads! Plus, there are rumors swirling that the talented Oscar-winner Mikey Madison might join us too. Filming is set to start towards the end of this year. Can’t wait to see what’s in store for us!

This August, you’ll find Cregger’s latest production, titled “Weapons,” gracing movie theaters. The star-studded cast includes Josh Brolin and Julia Garner. Notably, his previous film, “Barbarian,” was warmly received by audiences in 2022.

In September 2026, the latest Resident Evil film is scheduled to hit the big screens. However, it won’t be the only video game adaptation releasing that year; Nintendo’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 is set for an April 2026 premiere as well.

Previously recognized primarily for his work with comedy troupe The Whitest Kids U’Know, Cregger has now gained significant acclaim and prosperity, having been contracted to write and direct the upcoming Resident Evil film for Sony, reportedly earning a fee of $20 million. Earlier, he co-directed Miss March with his late WKUK collaborator Trevor Moore, but it was Barbarian that significantly boosted his career.
