New pope is a „casual gamer.” Leo XIV’s brother reveals what games he enjoys most

Pope Leo XIV captivated Catholics not just by his scholarly background, but also through his unexpected enthusiasm for leisurely pastimes.

On May 8th, Robert Francis Prevost was chosen as the 192nd pope, making him the first North American to hold this position within the Catholic Church. Yet, it’s not just his historical significance that sets him apart from previous leaders. This esteemed pontiff, an Augustinian clergyman, studied at Villanova, a census-designated place and a Catholic university, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematical sciences rather than theology, surprising many. Moreover, his passion for tennis is widely recognized.

What came as a shock to some internet users was the revelation by the Pope’s brother, John Prevost, that just before heading for the conclave, the future Pope engaged in several rounds of word games like Wordle and Words with Friends (as reported by NBC5 Chicago/ArsTechnica).

Pope’s word games

One could contend that since “Leon XIV” plays “casual” video games casually, he may not be considered a traditional gamer. Yet, his engagement with a digital game at 69 years of age signifies the evolution of societal norms. Indeed, it wasn’t long ago when games were primarily associated with children and linked to rising violence levels. However, even in today’s era, it remains uncommon for seniors to find enjoyment in such relaxed and easy-to-play video games, unless there are specific health benefits involved.

According to Ars Technica’s report, it’s interesting to note that by 2024, around 44% of Baby Boomers (Americans born between 1946 and 1964) are enjoying video games. On the other hand, a survey by Civic Science revealed that only 15% of respondents had ever played Wordle, with 13% expressing fondness for this straightforward game. Interestingly, this niche group includes the new Pope as well.

While it’s not accurate to say that no previous Popes ever discussed gaming, some may recall an unusual gift presented to Pope Francis – Undertale – as well as the “blessing” extended to Pokémon fans by John Paul II (through The Medium). However, it is also important to note that we’ve had critical remarks on the subject from both Benedict XIV in 2007 and Francis in 2016.
