The recent announcement about the new studios in Saudi Arabia comes after the news earlier this month that Film AlUla, a film commission for the green oasis and vast canyons of northwest Saudi Arabia, entered into an agreement with The MBS Group, which includes Manhattan Beach Studios where James Cameron’s “Avatar” sequels are being filmed. This deal allows The MBS Group to exclusively manage and operate AlUla Studios, their advanced facilities. Additionally, Neom, the location of Saudi Arabia’s future city in development, boasts brand-new film production studios as well.
Saudi Arabia offers a 40%-plus cash rebate on international film and TV productions.
Since 2017, when it lifted its 35-year ban on cinema with religious ties, Saudi Arabia has been experiencing an explosion of activity in every sector of the film industry. It has now become the highest-grossing region in Middle East and North Africa for box office earnings from theaters. It’s evident that inviting international film and TV productions is a significant aspect of this government-led initiative.
