When will First Light be released?
The release date for First Light hasn’t been disclosed as of now. It was initially unveiled back in November 2020, and it seemed like a deliberate move to entice people to join IO Studios on this project, given that revealing games early in development is often done to attract talent within the video game industry.
As a seasoned gamer, I’m thrilled to share that Rodrigo Santoro, a gaming industry veteran previously with Ubisoft, hopped aboard at IO Interactive in 2024, taking up the role of Missions Director for the upcoming James Bond game. Santoro expressed his delight about joining IO, stating that most companies are busy churning out sequels, so he’s pumped to take on a fresh challenge with this new project.
Preorder First Light
For now, you can’t place preorders for Project 007, but as soon as that option becomes available, we’ll provide you with a guide on how to do so.
First Light trailer and reveal information
To date, the only video for First Light has been the promotional clip that debuted alongside the game announcement in 2020. This sneak peek didn’t reveal much, but it did incorporate the stylish aesthetic and iconic music from the James Bond film series. In June 2025, a new teaser image surfaced, depicting the new James Bond character wielding a firearm and donning a trench coat. This week, the full game will be officially unveiled, and we’ll share more information as it becomes available.

First Light platforms
As an eager enthusiast, I can confirm that the Nintendo Switch 2 is currently the only platform where First Light has been officially confirmed. Yet, there’s a strong presumption that it will also grace the screens of PlayStation and Xbox consoles. IO Interactive, the developer, hinted that the game is being tailored for “modern systems and platforms.
First Light story, setting, and characters
In the First Light teaser video, Bond himself isn’t featured, leaving some uncertainty about whether the character’s appearance in future installments might not resemble any of the actors who portrayed him previously.
It has been verified that the game, First Light, narrates an origin tale for James Bond, marking the initial occasion for any James Bond entertainment to do so. This narrative promises a completely unique Bond adventure. Through the progression of the game’s plot, players will have the opportunity to acquire their 00 status.
So far, here’s what we understand about the plot: It remains a mystery where Bond’s next adventure will take him. Known for their worldwide settings, James Bond films usually involve Bond chasing villains across various continents. The action is another staple of these movies, and it’s anticipated that First Light won’t be an exception. In addition to the high-octane action, there are moments when Bond needs to operate covertly. Given IO Interactive’s background with the Hitman series, their expertise could prove useful in creating such stealthy sequences.
IO plans for the game to initiate a fresh trilogy. In an interview with IGN, CEO Hakan Abrak revealed that First Light won’t follow any previous Bond films. Instead, the developers are granted autonomy to craft their unique interpretation of James Bond for the game.
Abrak mentioned that what makes this project thrilling is that they were able to craft an entirely fresh narrative, rather than adapting a movie. He envisions it as the start of a potential trilogy in the future. Moreover, he emphasized that this is a unique Bond character, specifically designed for gamers, giving them the opportunity to claim and grow with their own Bond. It’s an exciting prospect to work alongside the creators on developing a young gaming-oriented Bond, leveraging all the traditional elements and rich history of the Bond franchise.
First Light game engine
Developed with IO’s exclusive Glacier engine, First Light is in progress. The company has put out a call for a skilled multiplayer programmer to join their team on Project 007, hinting at the possibility, though not definitively confirming, that the upcoming James Bond game may include a multiplayer feature.
Who’s developing First Light?
First Light is in “active development” at IO’s offices in Copenhagen, Denmark and Malmo, Sweden.
Speaking about the project, Abrak stated, “Developing a unique Bond game is an immense task, but I’m confident that IO Interactive, collaborating closely with EON and MGM, will create something truly exceptional for our gamers and fans. Our dedicated team can’t wait to pour their creativity into the renowned James Bond world and produce the most ambitious game ever made by our studio.
Previously serving as MGM’s head honcho, Robert Marick expresses their ambition to introduce a fresh perspective on this iconic franchise to both gamers and Bond enthusiasts worldwide. IO Interactive, known for creating captivating, interactive worlds with immersive storytelling, will be the ones shaping this project. Marick parted ways with MGM following the announcement of the game.
A James Bond shakeup
One open inquiry regarding the First Light endeavor revolves around whether any aspects of the project underwent modifications following the sale of Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson’s shares to Amazon MGM Studios, thereby shifting creative control to this new entity.
For nearly six decades, the duo Broccoli and Wilson have overseen the James Bond franchise, taking over from their father Cubby Broccoli. Throughout this time, they have been the main engine powering the entire Bond series, choosing the actors to embody the legendary spy character. Their influence extends beyond cinema, with Broccoli himself playing a key role in decision-making for the video games; it was recently revealed that Broccoli raised several concerns about the GoldenEye game for Wii.
It’s uncertain how the new management at Amazon MGM Studios might affect IO’s games, but we (TopMob) have made contact with the studio to gather further information. Likewise, we (TopMob) have also attempted to get in touch with Amazon MGM Studios for more details.
History of James Bond games
Various game developers have produced James Bond video games over the years. One of the most notable and well-known among these is GoldenEye 007 from Rare, released in 1997 for Nintendo 64. Electronic Arts also developed several James Bond titles such as Agent Under Fire, Nightfire, and Rogue Agent. Activision then took over, publishing games like Quantum of Solace and Blood Stone. However, it’s been seven years since a new console James Bond game was released (2012’s 007 Legends). A mobile game titled Cypher 007 came out in 2023, though.
The next James Bond movie
Work has begun on the 26th installment of the Bond series, with David Heyman (known for Harry Potter) and Amy Pascal (associated with Spider-Man) as producers. Amazon MGM Studios will be responsible for production, but specifics like the cast, director, release date, and who’ll step into the role of James Bond remain undisclosed at this time. At one point, Aaron Taylor-Johnson was rumored to be a strong contender, but nothing is confirmed yet.
A Wall Street Journal article from December 2024 reported a conflict between Broccoli and Wilson and Amazon executives concerning the future of the series, leading to delays in significant project advancements. With Broccoli and Wilson no longer involved, speculation arises that Amazon could accelerate proceedings for Bond 26 promptly.
