Have you heard that the well-known Puyo Puyo puzzle games are actually derived from a dungeon exploration RPG series called Mado Monogataru? That’s correct! The upcoming installment, Mado Monogatari: Fia And The Wondrous Academy, is set to release in English on Nintendo Switch, PS5, PS4, and Steam later this year. Although the exact launch date hasn’t been announced yet, you can preorder it now for $50 on Amazon.
The Mado Monogatari series, which began in 1990 on MSX and PC-98, is a longstanding role-playing game that delves into dungeon exploration. Initially, the series resembled games like Wizardry and Shin Megami Tensei with first-person dungeon crawling. However, subsequent installments have ventured into various styles of dungeon crawling, such as Fia and the Wondrous Academy’s top-down Mystery Dungeon-style gameplay. Interestingly, Fia and the Wondrous Academy is only the second Mado Monogatari game to receive an English version. The previous game in the series, Sorcery Saga: Curse of the Great Curry God, was released on Vita in North America in 2014 and later on PC in 2018. Similar to Fia and the Wondrous Academy, Sorcery Saga: Curse of the Great Curry God is a roguelike mystery dungeon with top-down gameplay and randomized dungeons. If you’re interested, you can buy it for $20 on Steam.
