As a seasoned strategy gamer with over two decades of Civilization under my belt, I must say that the announcement of Isabella and Spain in Civilization 7 has me absolutely thrilled! I remember playing as them back in Civ 2 and 3, and their return feels like a reunion with old friends.
In my gaming world, I recently tuned into the latest Civilization 7 live stream, where they delved deeper into the Exploration Era. During this journey, they unveiled yet another fresh leader – Isabella, hailing from Spain. With her abilities tailored to fit snugly in the Exploration Age and a multitude of gold-generating strategies, it seems that mastering Isabella with Spain could make for an irresistible combo when Civilization 7 finally drops!
Civilization 7 will include Isabella and Spain
In the latest updates and accompanied by a detailed first-look video now available on YouTube, Isabella has been introduced as one of the diverse leaders set to appear in Civilization 7. Although she didn’t make an appearance as a leader in recent versions, Isabella reemerges alongside Xerxes from Civ 3. Interestingly, Isabella was initially introduced in Civ 2 as the leader of Spain along with Philip II. However, her portrayal as a Spanish leader in Civ 3 marks over two decades since she last became playable in this role.
As an economic and expansion-focused leader, Isabella boasts a special trait known as the “Seven Cities of Gold.” This feature grants you gold whenever a new natural wonder is uncovered, with a larger reward when you discover wonders in remote regions. For sea enthusiasts, Isabella also earns extra gold for purchasing naval units and decreases their maintenance costs.
In the Exploration Era, Spain was officially recognized as a new civilization. The advantages they possess are reminiscent of Queen Isabella, with their distinctive trait being the Siglo de Oro, which enhances the efficiency of converting a town into a city, particularly in distant territories. Additionally, Spain’s unique quarter, the Plaza, increases gold production for every settlement situated far away. Lastly, they possess the Casa de Contratación building, which provides additional gold from navigable rivers and resource tiles as adjacencies.
Spanish Conquistador could be huge in Civ 7
As a gaming enthusiast, I must say that what truly sets Spain apart for me is the thrilling Conquistador unit – a Great Person exclusively crafted in Cities with Wharfs. What makes this even more intriguing is that your very own Conquistador is picked at random, and you can only receive one, opening up the opportunity to collect them all, provided you’re ready for the increased gold demands. Here are the possible units along with their unique bonuses:
- Ferdinand Magellan: Activated on a Fleet Commander in Distant Lands to receive increased Movement and Sight.
- Francisco Pizarro: Activated on a Commander in Distant Lands with a set number of empty slots to grant the Commander a set number of Infantry Units and a Cavalry Unit.
- Juan Ponce de León: Activated on a Water tile in Distant Lands to grant additional Movement to Treasure Fleets.
- Christopher Columbus: Activated on any Water tile in Distant Lands to reveal the world map except for the interior of Distant Lands.
- Hernán Cortés: Activated on a Commander in Distant Lands with a set number of empty slots to grant the Commander a set number of Infantry Units.
- Hernando de Soto: Activated in an Independent Power’s Territory in Distant Lands to make that Independent Power a City-State with you as Suzerain.
- Francisco de Orellana: Activated on a Navigable River tile in Distant Lands to receive Gold for every tile in that River (effect scales based on game speed).
- Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca: Activated on or adjacent to a Natural Wonder in Distant Lands to gain Gold for each Natural Wonder tile here or adjacent to this tile (effect scales based on game speed).
- Miguel López de Legazpi: Activated on a Commander in Distant Lands with a set number of empty slots to grant the Commander a set number of Ranged Units and an Infantry Unit.
- Inés Suárez: Activated on an eligible Settlement location in Distant Lands to create a new Town.
As a gaming enthusiast, I can’t help but feel a surge of excitement when I think about the arrival of Civilization 7 and the mighty Spanish civilization it will bring. Even if you’re not a fan of Isabella, Spain could prove to be an incredibly powerful choice for the Exploration Era. The synergy between these two seems almost destined in the world of Civilization 7; they seem tailor-made for each other. It’s tough to deny their potential combined strength!
