As a seasoned globe-trotter and lifelong fan of Carmen Sandiego, the news that our favorite international artifact thief is back with a new game has me practically dancing the tango on the streets of Paris! The fact that this time I’ll be stepping into Carmen’s iconic red coat and hat, rather than chasing after her, feels like a dream come true.
In this fresh game titled “Carmen Sandiego,” which marks her return since 2015 with the release of “Carmen Sandiego Returns,” you’ll find yourself stepping into the role of the infamous artifact thief, Carmen Sandiego herself, for the very first time in the franchise. This innovative game offers a fresh take on the classic series.
Instead, San Diego abandoned his criminal ways and now operates as an undercover agent, pursuing V.I.L.E. agents worldwide. The video game draws inspiration from the Netflix animated series, first released in 2019.
In terms of gameplay, you’ll take charge of Carmen Sandiego herself, using tools like a hang-glider and grappling hook to maneuver. The new games seem to have a 3D-platformer feel compared to the originals. The trailer suggests that there will be elements of stealth, as you can see Carmen pickpocketing someone. As you gather clues and information, you’ll be able to identify and capture members of V.I.L.E. (Vile International League of Evildoers).
It’s yet unclear how significant the educational and entertaining elements (edutainment) will be in the game. But what is certain is that you’ll traverse numerous real-world locations such as Iceland, Ghana, Egypt, India, Japan, and Australia.
As for when Carmen Sandiego will launch, we’re still waiting for an exact date, but it’s expected to drop sometime in the first quarter of 2025. Once available, you’ll be able to play it on PC, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, and mobile devices. Additionally, the game will be accessible via the Netflix app. If you’re excited about it, feel free to add it to your wishlist now!
