Information and screenshots for the updated version of “Bravely Default Flying Fairy: High Definition Remaster” have been revealed by Square Enix, providing insights into the game’s narrative, characters, battle system, and various aspects of the remastered features.
Significantly, the ‘Encounter Rate’ segment explains that you can adjust the random encounter rate ‘between 50% and 200%’. In contrast, the initial 3DS edition released in the West (based on the Sequel version) allowed players to disable the encounter rate entirely. This indicates that certain aspects of this new remaster might differ from the original Western version. However, we’ll need further information from Square Enix to confirm these differences.
The details can be found below, via Square Enix.
Concept
The story of light and shadow that never fades is reborn
On June 5, 2025, the remastered version of “Bravely Default,” the initial installment in the Bravely series which spawned games like Octopath Traveler, will be available on Nintendo Switch 2. This RPG game, with over 3 million units sold worldwide, features a timeless tale of crystals and warriors of light, customizable job-based party systems, and the signature Brave & Default battle system. To enhance your gaming experience, the game’s conveniences have been updated for smoother playability. The enduring story of light and darkness is reborn anew.
Story
Make for the distant land of Luxendarc as a warrior of light
Out of nowhere, a massive fissure suddenly appeared, disrupting the world’s tranquility. Tiz, the lone inhabitant left from a devoured village, finds himself in this predicament. Overwhelmed by sorrow, he stumbles upon a young woman named Agnès, who is a vestal. Joined together, they embark on an adventure aimed at sealing the fissure and rescuing the crystals trapped in darkness… They venture forth, oblivious to the importance of their mission.
Characters
Tiz Arrior
Voiced by: Bryce Papenbrook
A kind, young man hoping to rebuild his home
Originating from the small hamlet of Norende, there was a shepherd who tragically witnessed the disappearance of his village and younger brother when the colossal Abyss erupted. Accompanying Agnès on her mission to seal this chasm, he also carries the ambition to resurrect Norende, standing as its sole survivor.
Agnès Oblige
Voiced by: Erin Fitzgerald
A vestal seeking to awaken the crystals
A young woman named Agnès, who has dedicated her life to tending the Wind Crystal from her youth, is accompanied by a fairy called Airy. This cryst-fairy met Agnès before the Great Chasm appeared. Guided by destiny, Agnès sets out on a voyage to banish the world’s darkness and revive its four crystals.
Edea Lee
Voiced by: Cassandra Lee Morris
A young woman in search of her own sense of justice.
Born as the sole child of the High Marshal in the Duchy of Eternia, she was assigned a mission by the duchy along with its Sky Knights to seize the Wind Vestal in Caldisla. However, disillusioned by the duplicity of her own land, she ultimately chose to ally herself with Tiz and his companions.
Ringabel
Voiced by: Spike Spencer
A man relying on a strange book to uncover his past
A youth who has lost his memory arrives at Caldisla, seeking his personal history. His solitary possession is a notebook labeled “D’s Journal” that strangely records upcoming occurrences. Intrigued by this coincidence, he chooses to join Tiz’s group because their names are also mentioned within the journal.
World
Kingdom of Caldisla
The starting place, a once peaceful nation now grappling with numerous challenges. These difficulties include the intrusion of the Sky Knights from Eternia into their land, as well as the emergence of the colossal rift known as the Great Chasm.
System
High-Definition Graphics
The high-definition character models and surroundings are now more vividly presented, bringing out the charming, storybook-esque aesthetics of the original version even more beautifully.
Redesigned UI for a Single Screen
The design of the dual-screen interface originally featured on the Nintendo 3DS has been revamped for the potential Nintendo Switch 2. Additionally, elements like suggested character levels for dungeons and a “Heal All” option are now included within the game itself.
Fast Forward
Not only does it boost the battle speed to a maximum of 4 times, but it also allows you to quickly advance through event scenes when autoplay is turned on. Feel free to experience the narrative at your preferred tempo.
Encounter Rate Settings
Adjust the frequency of unexpected foe appearances on the game map so it varies between every other step (50%) and four steps out of ten (200%). You can change this rate dynamically during gameplay, based on your preferred strategy or the challenges you face in your journey.
Upgraded Online Compatibility for Modern Networks
In my excitement as a fan, I’d like to share that the social aspects from the original Nintendo 3DS game have been significantly enhanced for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2! What makes this even more thrilling is the introduction of free network connectivity. This means you can choose your own path – either collaborate with friends from your platform’s buddy list or embark on an adventure solo, the choice is yours!
Two Varieties of Brand-New Minigames
Pause your journey for a bit and dive into two brand new mini-games instead! Completing these games will grant you several perks, among which are fresh entries in D’s Journal that delve deeper into the tale’s hidden aspects.
Battle
Consider carefully as you plan your moves in these strategic turn-based encounters. Deciding on the appropriate action, the fighting style, and the number of steps to take – a range of tactical options awaits you in this intricate and immersive combat system.
Brave
In a single powerful turn, perform actions up to four times, either launching repeated attacks to destroy your opponent or using a mix of revival and healing abilities to escape difficult situations. You also have the option to spend BP you haven’t accumulated yet, but be aware that this will cause your BP to drop into the negative and stop you from taking further actions until it refills—exercise caution and avoid reckless aggression.
Default
Strengthen your defensive strategies and seize the right moment to strike, accumulating power while minimizing damage inflicted by the opposition. Using a turn to assess the enemy’s tactics can be extremely beneficial when facing an unpredictable adversary or boss. Be aware that the enemy is also capable of bracing for impact and defaulting; if they consistently default in succession, you should devise a plan to withstand their subsequent attacks.
Abilities
As a gamer, I find it intriguing that boosting a character’s job level unlocks two kinds of skills: combat abilities that come into play during battles, and support abilities that grant their benefits simply by being equipped. To strategize my future job development, I always take a peek at the job menu to see what unique skills each job can learn.
Command Abilities
From over twenty occupational options available, characters can blend skills from any two jobs simultaneously. Experiment with the mixes that appeal to you, either by creating diverse attack sequences or concocting a variety of supportive abilities.
Support Abilities
Once you’ve unlocked a support ability, it can be added to any character, regardless of their current role. As the story advances, you’ll gain the ability to equip more at once. It’s beneficial to periodically reassess your setup as you face increasingly powerful opponents.
Jobs
As Tiz and his companions travel, they’ll encounter various formidable adversaries. Overpowering one of these adversaries could earn you their asterisk, a gemstone that bestows upon the holder a unique job. Each job comes with its own distinctive combat style and skills to master, so acquiring new jobs offers an exponentially expanding range of battle strategies to discover.
Freelancer
Although their statistics might be ordinary, freelancers have the opportunity to pick up useful skills like assessing an opponent’s health and vulnerabilities or identifying the number of hidden treasures within a dungeon.
Monk
Monks exhibit impressive health points (HP) and physical power, and they can overpower opponents using their potent abilities, which inflict substantial damage. Because they are capable of dishing out powerful blows even without weapons, you won’t have to worry about investing in armaments for them.
White Mage
These spellcasters excel in the use of beneficial white magic, which can either replenish health points (HP) or fortify the defense of their comrades. Although they might lack robust defenses personally, including one in your team brings a tremendous sense of tranquility.
Black Mage
These sorcerers utilize dark spells for offensive purposes, summoning diverse elements to assault opponents and weaken them significantly. In certain instances, they can annihilate whole enemy groups by casting spells that exploit their vulnerabilities effectively.
Knight
With great energy and vigilance, knights serve as protectors at gatherings. They’re capable of safeguarding their more vulnerable companions as well as dishing out appropriate force when required.
Music
A versatile artist, Revo, excels in lyric writing, composing, and arranging. As the mastermind behind Sound Horizon, he pioneered the distinctive genre of “Story music” since its major-label debut in 2004. On March 5, 2025, Sound Horizon released their latest creation, “Halloween to asa no monogatari.” In 2012, Revo started a new venture called Linked Horizon to collaborate musically with various productions. This project provided the music for “Bravely Default” in 2012 and composed the opening theme for the 2013 anime series “Attack on Titan.” They also performed in the Kohaku Uta Gassen that same year.
