In Season 6 Episode 2, Serena Joy discovers her purpose by leading the new region. At first, she wishes to remain at the religious community in Canada. However, when Lawrence informs her that it’s just a matter of time before the Wheelers arrive to seize Noah, she opts to depart instead.

As Lawrence, I find myself appealing to Serena for her assistance in rebuilding our shattered nation of Gilead. “We’ve caused the damage,” I acknowledge, “now it’s time for us to mend what we’ve broken.

Despite the potential catastrophe New Bethlehem poses for what remains of the U.S. government, there’s no disputing that it is more visually appealing than mainland Gilead. Following the debut of the Hulu series, speculation about its location has arisen.

Where is New Bethlehem?

In the novel The Handmaid’s Tale, New Bethlehem is depicted as a “modernized and tactically open island” within Gilead territory. While its precise location is not disclosed, it is generally thought to be close to Boston.

This place is strikingly beautiful and bears no resemblance to the dismal, gray cities of Gilead we’re accustomed to. Instead, it’s a picturesque coastal village nestled by the water, boasting quaint, well-maintained houses and leafy avenues that create an illusion of tranquility.

The homes have a humble charm, boasting vibrant, wooden facades. It was Lawrence who conceived the plan for New Bethlehem; he feels that this new venture will rectify the atrocities of Gilead’s tyranny and strengthen global relationships as well.

At an opportune moment for Canada, the sentiment against American refugees reaching its peak, New Bethlehem serves as a sanctuary for refugees, providing them with a chance to reunite with their dear ones.

In this place, the strict laws of Gileaad are nonexistent – no handmaids or executions take place here. Interestingly enough, women are permitted to engage in reading, writing, and work within these boundaries. However, one significant challenge remains: New Bethlehem does not undo the atrocities committed by Gileaad or the ongoing suffering it inflicts.

Unfortunately, there’s been a lot of distressing events taking place on the mainland, and they continue to occur. Despite being marketed as a “liberalized” haven, this supposedly free zone is more about spreading propaganda than fostering genuine change or revolution.

In addition, according to Tuello in the first episode of The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6, the US Government-In-Exile is close to being closed down, and New Bethlehem might serve as the final blow to its existence.

As a supporter, I’m expressing that we aim to establish peaceful ties with Gilead. This process involves withdrawing our recognition of the United States, which is currently in place.
