New Banjo-Kazooie Odds Are “Probably Better Than Zero But Not Much,” Says Composer

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but wonder if the talented Grant Kirkhope, the original composer for Banjo-Kazooie, might return to compose for a brand new installment in the series. However, when it comes to anticipating a sequel for this iconic 3D platformer, he seems to be taking a more laid-back approach, leaving us all on tenterhooks.

In a conversation with Eurogamer, Kirkhope discussed the possibility of a new Banjo-Kazooie game. He expressed his belief that it’s rather improbable due to two main reasons: firstly, locating a suitable developer since Rare might not be an option in his view; secondly, the size of the fanbase. As he put it, “If my Twitter following of over a hundred thousand is the Banjo fanbase in its entirety, then that’s not financially viable.” He added that to make the game profitable, there should be millions of buyers, and the game needs to appeal to a new generation of children.

If Rare isn’t involved anymore, Toys For Bob has shown interest in reviving Banjo-Kazooie. However, the composer, Grant Kirkhope, isn’t certain if Microsoft would approve this project. He stated, “I’m unsure if Microsoft would give their approval… It’s likely there’s some hope, but it might not be a lot.

On previous occasions, Kirkhope has expressed skepticism regarding a new Banjo-Kazooie game. In 2023, his sentiment remained consistent as he emphasized the importance of finding the right studio and humor for a fresh installment. Moreover, it appears that Kirkhope remains uncertain about the number of Banjo fans currently active.
