For some time now, Netflix has hinted at creating a show similar to Yellowstone, and they’ve just released a complete trailer. However, Taylor Sheridan enthusiasts might find themselves slightly let down for a particular reason.
When considering a Sheridan show, images of rugged cowboy characters, intense, often uncomfortable-to-watch dramas, and possibly a guest appearance by Sheridan himself come to mind. Essentially, these television series are characteristically raw and straightforward.
Is there a possibility that Netflix could recreate his unique charm? Indeed, they currently offer several of his previous series (like Yellowstone and 1883), but so far, they haven’t attempted an original production inspired by him… yet, but it seems they are planning to do so now.
2024 saw Netflix unveiling a Yellowstone-inspired series concept halfway through the year, and at last, sneak peeks are being shared. But, Yellowstone enthusiasts might want to approach the teaser with caution.
Ransom Canyon is Virgin River in a cowboy hat, not Yellowstone
Title “Ransom Canyon” hints at a television series that seems to share similarities with Netflix’s popular show “Virgin River”, primarily due to the high dose of melodramatic storylines it appears to offer.
Keep in mind, Yellowstone primarily revolves around the Dutton family’s struggle to maintain their ranch and heritage, accompanied by frequent physical altercations among characters. Throughout the series, there are incidents of murder, betrayal, and violence, giving it a decidedly dark and intense tone.
At present, Ransom Canyon seems to be exhibiting different characteristics. Interestingly, our hero Staten Kirkland finds himself in a predicament, trying hard not to sell his ranch, but it’s the budding romance between him and Quin that catches our attention more. To complicate matters, Quin has been seen spending time with Staten’s long-time rival Davis. Thus, we find ourselves immersed in a romantic entanglement involving three key characters.
If the new characters, Yancy and Ellie, don’t remind you of Mel, Jack, and Charmaine from the early days for you, then let me tell you about them. From what we can see in the trailer, Yancy seems to be a mysterious drifter who is getting very close to Ellie, giving off a similar ‘bad boy’ vibe as Brady. This suggests that there may be another relationship dynamic similar to Brie and Brady in the storyline too.
Primarily, these ranches offer a scenic setting for Netflix’s expertise in narrating the everyday dramas and personal stories of characters, with their relationships taking center stage. There’s enough Western flavor to catch Yellowstone fans’ attention, but it’s those drawn to Virgin River who might find themselves particularly captivated by this production.
Starting April 17, you can find Ransom Canyon on Netflix. Until then, stay tuned for the latest news about Virgin River Season 7, 1923 Season 2, and other exciting TV series hitting your screens this month!
