Netflix’s Upcoming Lovecraftian Adaptation Continues 1 Mike Flanagan Horror Trend

Netflix is getting a new horror series with a Lovecraftian twist, and it looks like director Mike Flanagan is bringing back a familiar style. It’s been a while since Flanagan left Netflix after creating several successful horror shows. Now, he’s returning to television with an adaptation of Stephen King’s Carrie, which will be released on Prime Video later this year.

Fans anticipating Mike Flanagan’s next Stephen King project have another horror series to look forward to: Bloody Smart on Netflix. This new show will be based on the works of Junji Ito, a horror artist greatly influenced by the cosmic horror style of H.P. Lovecraft, though it’s not a direct adaptation of Lovecraft’s stories.

Junji Ito is famous for his terrifying manga like Tomie, Gyo, and Uzumaki, which tell strange stories where the line between reality and nightmare blurs. He’s often compared to H.P. Lovecraft because his work brilliantly shows how small and vulnerable humans are when faced with the mysteries of the universe.

The new Netflix series adapting Lovecraft’s stories will not only have a Lovecraftian feel, but it will also use a similar storytelling technique as Mike Flanagan’s shows.

Bloody Smart Is Netflix’s First Live-Action Take On Junji Ito’s Works

Junji Ito’s terrifying manga has been adapted into movies and TV shows several times. Netflix has already produced shows based on his work, like Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre (2023). But Bloody Smart is the very first live-action adaptation of his stories to debut on the streaming platform.

Junji Ito’s horror stories, similar to those of H.P. Lovecraft, are notoriously hard to bring to the screen. His manga relies heavily on bizarre visuals and unsettling psychological themes that don’t always work well in live action. However, some adaptations have been successful; for example, the 2000 live-action film of Uzumaki remains a beloved cult favorite.

Attempts to adapt his manga into live-action or animated series haven’t been very successful lately. The 2024 anime of Uzumaki didn’t quite live up to the hype, but the first trailer for Netflix’s Bloody Smart looks encouraging, and it’s still too early to say how that adaptation will turn out.

The new series, Mandarin, is set in a competitive school town where everyone prioritizes academic success. The story kicks off when a strange tree, covered in bright red fruit, suddenly appears. This fruit promises to boost intelligence, but comes with a dangerous side effect: it unleashes a person’s hidden desires and inner demons, often with devastating consequences.

The story, Bloody Smart, appears to use the pressure for perfection in schools as a way to explore frightening, Lovecraftian themes. If done right, it has the potential to be one of the better adaptations of Junji Ito’s work.

Like Mike Flanagan’s Shows, Bloody Smart Will Combine Terrors From Multiple Horror Stories

Mike Flanagan’s series on Netflix often weave together elements from various books. Take, for example, his show The Fall of the House of Usher, which, while named after a famous Edgar Allan Poe story, actually combines ideas and plot points from many of his poems and tales.

His other shows, such as The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, Midnight Mass, and The Midnight Club, also draw inspiration from various horror stories, updating them for a contemporary audience. The upcoming Bloody Smart is expected to follow this pattern, incorporating elements from several manga by Junji Ito.

As a huge fan of both Lovecraft and Ito, I think borrowing from Ito’s style could be amazing for the Netflix horror show! They could pick the most genuinely creepy parts of his work – the disturbing images and the way he messes with your head – and build a really compelling, ongoing story. I’m really hoping this series lives up to the potential!
