As a seasoned critic with a penchant for the unconventional, I am always intrigued by the fusion of genres and cultures that challenge the status quo. The upcoming anthology series “Tomorrow and I,” hailing from the unlikely duo of science fiction and socially conservative Thailand, piqued my curiosity from the get-go.
The genre of science fiction, traditionally associated with progressive ideologies, finds an unexpected fusion with socially conservative Thailand in the upcoming anthology series “Tomorrow and I,” set for release by global streaming giant Netflix towards the end of 2024.
Under the guidance of director Paween Purijitpanya, this four-part series creatively explores familiar situations in unique manners. Each 70-minute episode tackles thought-provoking topics such as: reviving deceased loved ones through cloning technology; the role of intelligent sex robots; the advancement of Buddhist teachings by artificial intelligence beyond traditional boundaries; and the possibility of relying on ‘octopuses’ to navigate daily life in constantly flooded cities.
The actors are Pakorn Chatborrirak, Violette Wautier, Waruntorn Paonil, Treechada Hongsyok, Ray Macdonald, Timethai, Thongchai Thongkuntom, Aelm Thavornsiri, Pongsatorn Jongwilas, Chananticha Chaipa, and Wanichaya Pornpanarittichai.
Previously, Purijitpanya has been involved in various roles such as writing, directing, or editing segments for films like “Body” (2007), “4bia” and its sequel “Phobia 2” (2009), the heartwarming film “Seven Something” (2012), the daring production “Ghost Lab” (2021), and an outstanding episode of “Liberation,” which is part of Season 2 of “Girl from Nowhere.
Earlier this year, the announcement was made that the show would be produced by Netflix, following their expansion in Southeast Asia’s production lineup. Now, they are giving fans a sneak peek during their ‘Geek Week’ event, and have just unveiled a teaser trailer.
In a statement, the company announced that this innovative collection of stories marks the initial science fiction production for Netflix Thailand. Here, we’re consistently exploring new territories within local narratives.
From Jungka Studio comes “Tomorrow and I”, one of several Thai productions that Netflix is supporting. This includes the horror anthology series “Terror Tuesday: Extreme”, based on a well-known radio program, as well as “The Believers”, which delves into faith and societal matters. Additionally, there’s “Doctor Climax” that offers a retro perspective on sex and intimacy from the 1970s, and “Master of the House”, an elevated take on the ‘lakorn’ genre or Thai soap operas, becoming the first Thai title to top Netflix’s Global Top 10 TV (non-English) series chart.
