Netflix has canceled several of its original series before they had a chance to fully develop, which is particularly confusing in cases like The Order. Despite receiving perfect scores for its first two seasons on Rotten Tomatoes, the show wasn’t renewed for a third, bringing an end to one of the few werewolf horror series with a loyal fanbase.
Even with its flaws, The Order still stands out as a prime example of what a high-quality werewolf show can be. Unfortunately, other shows – both within the werewolf genre and the wider world of supernatural fiction – haven’t quite managed to achieve the same storytelling excellence.
The Order Understood What It Was
The show confidently stayed true to itself, refusing to imitate others – a quality that’s surprisingly rare on television these days.
I think one of the things that really worked with this show was how well it knew what it was. It was clear when it really found its footing and stuck to it, without getting lost in too many different ideas. Honestly, I believe keeping the central mysteries focused on just two main groups – instead of trying to expand things too much – was key to keeping the show’s identity strong and consistent.
The Order follows Jack Morton (Jake Manley), a freshman at Belgrave University, as he pledges to two secret societies: the Hermetic Order of the Blue Rose and the Knights of St. Christopher. This decision unexpectedly throws him into a dangerous conflict between werewolves and those who practice dark magic.
Jack, being a werewolf, uses his inside knowledge to secretly observe the Order and assist other werewolves in disrupting their schemes whenever possible. Despite some weaknesses in The Order, these didn’t significantly impact the show’s overall quality or popularity.
The show relies heavily on its atmosphere and narrative, but it also stands out by presenting a unique take on werewolves. Instead of the typical focus on their wild side and connection to nature or the moon, it portrays them as more refined and intelligent.
Instead of relying on unnecessary twists, The Order presents a fresh take on werewolves, clearly defined groups, and consistent character loyalty – particularly Jack’s dedication to the Knights. This approach allows the show to build a solid understanding of its world and avoids losing sight of its central story.
What Supernatural Horrors Should Learn from The Order
Simply presenting a story isn’t enough; true learning needs to happen. The Order provides some valuable lessons, especially for werewolf stories, but its insights could benefit the wider world of supernatural horror as well.
The show avoids common fantasy clichés by focusing on two distinct and compelling groups – the Hermetic Order of the Blue Rose and its rivals. This allows the mythology to develop organically from the needs and conflicts of these factions, creating natural tension and a sense of dread through the use of dark magic.
Werewolves, and supernatural stories in general, can be confusing because different versions have different rules. It’s been a long time since a werewolf show felt truly unique like this one.
Shows hoping to take inspiration from The Order should establish a well-defined backstory for their supernatural elements and focus on a limited scale. This will help maintain tension and a close, immersive atmosphere, instead of sacrificing those qualities by attempting a story that’s too expansive for its resources.
