Taylor Sheridan continues to enrich the modern Western genre by contributing unique pieces, and now another addition has been made. Namely, Ransom Canyon, a fresh take on contemporary Western romance, has recently entered the arena.
The Netflix-exclusive show titled “Ransom Canyon”, starring Josh Duhamel and Minka Kelly, premiered on April 17th and has swiftly gained popularity. Hailing from the creative mind of April Blair (known for ‘Wednesday’ and ‘All American’), it is an adaptation of Jodi Thomas’ book series that was published between 2015 and 2017.
After its debut on April 17th, Ransom Canyon quickly found itself among the top-ranked books. For the period spanning from April 14th to 20th, it was the runner-up, coming in second place following another book that had held the number one spot during its second week since publication.
As a passionate cinephile, I couldn’t help but be captivated by the incredible success of Ransom Canyon. It garnered an astounding 7.2 million views and a staggering 56.6 million hours of viewing time across its ten episodes. This gripping series even managed to secure a spot in the Top 10 in an impressive 59 countries worldwide! To top it all off, it became the number one show in not one, but two nations – the United States and South Africa. What a remarkable achievement!
The story of Ransom Canyon unfolds in the scenic Texas Hill Country, where it chronicles the struggle among three influential ranching families for dominance over the land. Surprisingly, although it has been a bestseller, this novel hasn’t received widespread acclaim from critics.
The first season of its adaptation, however, shows a mixed reception. It has garnered a disappointing 50% rating based on 14 reviews from critics, but a more encouraging 74% approval rating from the audience.
Will There Be a Ransom Canyon Season 2?
Having just witnessed the premiere of this captivating Western romance, I find myself eagerly anticipating a second season from Netflix. Despite the show’s cliffhanger ending, Ransom Canyon left me yearning for more. As I wait with bated breath to unravel the mysteries left unsolved, neither Netflix nor the creators have made any official announcements regarding Season 2. Nevertheless, given the intrigue and excitement generated by the series thus far, it seems that the prospects are quite promising.
As a passionate film enthusiast, I can’t help but share my excitement over the teaser from April Blair, the mastermind behind “Ransom Canyon.” She hinted that they’ve already been brainstorming the plotlines for Season 2, even before it’s officially renewed!
In her own words, she mentioned, “We’ve already started the writers’ room… though the show hasn’t been greenlit yet for Season 2, but we were already pondering over it. Our aim was to provide a sense of resolution regarding that heart-wrenching ending, in a way.”
She further added, “Our intention is to bring some closure to that loss and uncover who was responsible and the truth behind it. This revelation will undeniably ignite a fresh wave of romantic tension between Lucas and Lauren, as you may well know. This opens up a plethora of opportunities for us to explore new stories in future seasons.”
In essence, it sounds like we’re in for a thrilling Season 2 filled with unresolved mysteries, dramatic twists, and the evolving relationship between Lucas and Lauren! I can hardly wait!
Apart from discussing other topics, she might also delve into how Margaret’s actions influence the Brigmans and Russells. If there is a second season, I believe this will be a significant element. However, since we are only in the initial stages of discussion, not all details can be revealed yet. Westerns often serve as moral stories, and our show is no exception. We strive to maintain a foundation of love, land, and legacy throughout every scene, exploring what these concepts truly signify.
She also mentioned that, if there’s a Season 2 of Ransom Canyon, it may involve a leap forward in time by at least six months. The reasoning being, “We have plans to move ahead to something new in New York, so the current thought is we might introduce a time jump of at least six months.
Ransom Cayon is streaming on Netflix.
