Viewers are eagerly awaiting season two of Netflix’s live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender, and Netflix has just shared some exciting news about the first season’s finale. While the show wasn’t universally loved, it’s a significant improvement over the 2010 film directed by M. Night Shyamalan. The series premiered in 2024 to mixed reviews – it appealed to general audiences but sparked debate among longtime fans of the original animated show. Despite differing opinions, the show proved popular, making additional seasons highly likely.
Season 3 of the live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender has finished filming! Netflix announced the news on Instagram with a photo of the cast, including Gordon Cormier (Aang), Kiawentiio (Katara), Dallas Liu (Zuko), Ian Ousley (Sokka), and Maria Zhang. The picture also featured Miya Cech, who joins the show as Toph in Seasons 2 and 3. For fans of the original series, Toph is a beloved blind Earthbending master who becomes a key teacher and friend to Aang.
The filming for Avatar: The Last Airbender is officially complete, according to a recent post. The post also hinted at exciting news about Season 2 coming soon. Seasons 2 and 3 were filmed consecutively, and Season 2 finished filming in May 2025. While there’s no official release date yet, many fans anticipate Season 2 will be available in early 2026, about two years after the show first premiered.
‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’s Final Season Could Be in Big Trouble
Netflix seems to be increasingly filming the last seasons of its popular shows one after another. For example, the fourth season of The Witcher, based on Andrzej Sapkowski’s books, has just been released, and they’ve already filmed and are now editing the fifth and final season. Avatar: The Last Airbender is another big Netflix series to film its final two seasons consecutively, and this practice might have some negative consequences.
The fourth season of The Witcher has received harsh criticism from both reviewers and viewers. Unfortunately, with Season 5 already filmed, the show can’t use audience feedback to improve things. Similarly, the first season of Avatar: The Last Airbender was controversial – it attracted a large audience with 154.4 million hours viewed in its first week (even more than One Piece), but fans of the original animated series were divided due to changes in the story and characters. If the second season faces similar issues, there won’t be an opportunity to make adjustments in a final season.
Expect Season 2’s release date to be revealed in the coming days or weeks.
