A fresh Korean film that mixes different genres is quickly becoming popular on Netflix. Korean shows and movies have become a global phenomenon over the past five years, particularly after the success of the Oscar-winning film Parasite and the Emmy-winning series Squid Game. Although other streaming services are starting to offer more Korean content, Netflix has been the leader in bringing a variety of Korean films and series to international audiences.
Netflix released a new Korean film called Good News on October 17th, featuring Sul Kyung-gu, Hong Kyung, and Ryoo Seung-bum. The movie blends black comedy, political themes, and thriller elements. It appears this unique combination is resonating with viewers, as Good News has quickly climbed into the top 10 on Netflix’s list of non-English films.
Between October 13th and 19th, the show reached number 9 on Netflix, garnering over 1.7 million views. The top three titles were Caramelo, Inside Furioza, and the Bollywood film War 2. Several other Korean series also appeared in the Top 10 list of non-English shows, including Typhoon Family and Romantics Anonymous.
The Netflix thriller No Other Choice, which recently generated Oscar buzz and premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last month, has received overwhelmingly positive reviews. It currently boasts a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 15 reviews. Critics, including Gregory Nussen from Screen Rant, have praised the film as a gripping political thriller that’s also a sharply satirical look at the abuse of power.
The film Good News is based on the true story of Japan Airlines Flight 351, which experienced a hijacking in March 1970. Set in that same year, the movie centers around a plane taken hostage by a Japanese extremist group. When their attempt to land in North Korea fails, an enigmatic figure called “Nobody” steps in to organize a covert rescue operation for the passengers.
Byun Sung-hyun directed the new Netflix film and co-wrote the script with Lee Jin-seong. He previously directed the 2017 film The Merciless and the 2022 political thriller Kingmaker, for which he won a Baeksang Award as Best Director.
Good News is available to stream on Netflix.
