Netflix’s Gears Of War Movie Eyes John Wick Co-Director

Approximately 3 years ago, Netflix announced intentions to create a film adaption of the renowned Gears of War video game series. Recently, it’s been reported that Netflix is considering John Wick co-director David Leitch for the task, aiming to bring characters like Marcus Fenix and Delta Squad into live-action.

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, negotiations are ongoing for Leitch to direct Gears of War, but no deal has been finalized as yet. Notably, Leitch is a former stuntman who didn’t receive credit for co-directing the first John Wick alongside Chad Stahelski. Since then, he has solidified his position as a standalone director with projects such as Deadpool 2, Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, Atomic Blonde, Bullet Train, and The Fall Guy under his belt.

Regardless of when Leitch signs his contract with Netflix, it appears that Gears of War won’t be his next movie. Instead, reports suggest that he is gearing up to film the heist thriller titled How to Rob a Bank for Amazon MGM Studios. This project features Nicholas Hoult and Anna Sawai as its stars.

2006 saw the debut of the initial Gears of War game, where it depicted the dire situation of humanity on a planet named Sera. The humans were continuously attacked by monstrous creatures called the Locust, which sprung from beneath the surface and left devastation in their path. Players took control of Marcus Fenix, leading Delta Squad in the thick of the battle against the Locust during this conflict.

For many years, former wrestler-turned-actor Dave Bautista has advocated for the role of Marcus, and there is a striking similarity between him and the character. On the other hand, Gears of War creator Cliff Bleszinski has previously been firm in his stance that Chris Pratt should not be cast in any part of the movie.

For approximately two decades, Gears of War has been exclusively available on Xbox. But now, Microsoft has revealed that Gears of War: Reloaded will be released for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC this coming summer. The upcoming game in the franchise is actually a prequel, titled Gears of War: E-Day, with an expected release date in 2026.
