Andy Parker, the creator of the show Boots, is defending his work against accusations from both sides of the political spectrum. He insists he didn’t create politically biased content, regardless of what the White House believes, and also denies any suggestion that the show promotes military propaganda. In an interview with Vanity Fair, Parker explained that Boots aims to explore complex issues with subtlety and nuance, avoiding overt political statements. The show, set in 1990, follows Cameron Cope, a teenager who secretly joins the Marines alongside his friend, despite the military’s ban on openly gay individuals. Parker hopes the show navigates these sensitive topics in a thoughtful and balanced way.
Pentagon spokesperson Kingsley Wilson recently criticized a show, calling it “woke garbage.” On October 16th, he told Entertainment Weekly that the U.S. military, under President Trump and Secretary Hegseth, is focused on returning to its traditional values. He stated they won’t lower their standards to align with any particular ideology, contrasting this with Netflix, which he accused of consistently creating and distributing content he considers to be “woke garbage” to both adults and children.
Parker doubts the Pentagon actually watched his show, and he intentionally avoided presenting a perfect image of the military. He aimed to create something that focused on the personal, emotional experience of the soldiers during that specific time and situation.
Wilson explained to Vanity Fair that current issues affecting transgender people, including policies impacting trans service members, are politically charged. While the show doesn’t feature any transgender characters, the sentiment behind supporting them is admirable.
