Netflix is shifting its “Fear Street” series to the 1980s decade. The initial trailer for the upcoming sequel in this widely beloved franchise has recently dropped, providing a glimpse into what high school dances were like towards the end of the ’80s.
Unlike the previous “Fear Street” trilogy, which was more of an adaptation inspired by R. L. Stine’s novel series, the upcoming slasher film titled “Prom Queen” is an authentic adaptation of a “Fear Street” novel. Based on “The Prom Queen,” first published in 1992, the film follows prom season at Shadyside High where the pack of popular girls are vying for the crown as usual. However, when an unconventional outsider is unexpectedly nominated to the court, and other girls begin mysteriously vanishing, the class of ’88 is in for a shocking prom night experience. The Netflix Fear Street series initially debuted as a three-part trilogy spread over consecutive weeks in July 2021. A fourth film was later confirmed for release in November 2023. Although R.L. Stine’s Fear Street books are intended for teenagers, all the Netflix movies have been rated R by the Motion Picture Association, indicating that they would not be suitable for viewing by minors under 17 if shown in theaters, unless accompanied by a parent or adult guardian.
The decision to turn the Fear Street series into an adult-themed slasher franchise marked a significant departure from the original content, as the creator had previously stated in 2022: “I was surprised when they were all R-rated! I’ve never done anything like that before. Seeing all those teenagers being killed made me realize, ‘Wow, now I have a slasher movie!’
Which Actors Might Be Crowned Prom Queen?
Just like the initial Fear Street trilogy, the movie Prom Queen will give its main cast their most prominent roles yet. India Fowler from The Agency plays Lori Granger, Suzanna Son from Red Rocket takes on Megan Rogers, Fina Strazza from Paper Girls is Tiffany Falconer, and Ella Rubin from Until Dawn portrays Melissa Mckendrick. David Iacono from Dead Boy Detectives, Chris Klein from American Pie, Lili Taylor from Daredevil: Born Again, Katherine Waterston from Fantastic Beasts, and Brennan Clost from The Next Step complete the ensemble. Ariana Greenblatt, known for her roles in Barbie and Ahsoka, is set to play Christy Renault.
Enthusiasts of the Fear Street series, particularly those who appreciate a good horror tale, will be delighted to know that Prom Queen may not be the final chapter in this franchise. Author R.L. Stine hinted back in January that Netflix had employed writers for the project. “The writers are working,” Stine said at the time, adding that he was keeping his fingers crossed. However, Netflix has yet to officially verify Stine’s statements, so details about the upcoming films remain scarce for now.
