Netflix’s Bela Bajaria on Her Emmy Dominance Across 35 Programs, What’s Next for ‘3 Body Problem’ and ‘Bridgerton’

As a movie reviewer with a deep appreciation for the art of storytelling and the dedication it takes to bring high-quality productions to life, I can’t help but feel elated upon hearing about Netflix’s impressive Emmy nomination tally this year. With 107 nominations, the streaming giant has once again proven itself as a dominant force in the industry.

Netflix regained the lead in Emmy nominations for 2024, earning a total of 107 nods – an improvement from the 103 nominations received the previous year. HBO/Max, which had held the top spot last year with 127 nominations, saw a significant drop to 91 nominations. Netflix’s content chief Bela Bajaria expressed her delight upon learning of this news during an interview with EbMaster on Wednesday morning.

Netflix had more Emmy nominations in other years, with a record-breaking 160 in 2020. However, Bajaria expressed her contentment with this year’s distribution of nominations among 35 various titles. Notable mentions include “The Crown” (with 18 nominations), “Ripley” (13), “Baby Reindeer” (11), “The Three-Body Problem” (6), and “Beckham” (5).

She expressed her great pride in the accomplishments of our creative partners, stating, “Today is a special day for us to recognize and honor these incredibly talented individuals and creators we collaborate with. I’m thrilled that their exceptional work has resulted in 107 nominations across 35 diverse titles, both new and returning. It’s a privilege to work alongside the best in the industry, spanning various genres, and witness their achievements being celebrated in this manner.”

During the last series, “The Crown” received even more Emmy nominations. Notable mentions went to Imelda Staunton, Dominic West for his first nomination, Elizabeth Debicki, Lesley Manville with her initial nod, and Jonathan Pryce.

As a movie critic, I’d put it this way: “I’d caution against underestimating ‘The Crown.’ Year after year, its nominations are a testament to the creative brilliance this show consistently delivers. It’s truly remarkable to witness such enduring excellence.”

Additionally, “Baby Reindeer,” a breakout limited/anthology series with nominations, includes recognition for the actors Richard Gadd (also nominated as a producer and writer), Jessica Gunning, and Nava Mau.

“Bajaria expressed her joy for Richard, Jessica, and Nava’s nominations. Our British team put on a fantastic performance, which is exciting to witness. It’s an incredible experience when newcomers get recognized or when we make history by breaking into a category. Nava’s nomination as the first transgender actress in this category is particularly noteworthy.” (Netflix passed on Gadd’s next project, “Lions,” for HBO instead.)

In addition to other newcomers, Bajaria highlighted Guy Ritchie as a noteworthy first-time nominee in the category of outstanding comedy directing for “The Gentlemen” at the Emmys.

Netflix received recognition in the form of a variety special (live) award for “The Greatest of All Time: Tom Brady.” Bajaria described this as the perfect finish to what she considered a successful implementation of Netflix’s expanding live events strategy. Additionally, “Girls5eva” garnered a writing nomination. Regarding the possibility of renewing this comedy series, Bajaria stated that no definitive decisions have been made yet.

I’m thrilled to see Bajaria keeping quiet about the specifics of how “3 Body Problem’s” last two seasons will unfold or come into being. The opportunity to work alongside Benioff and Weiss on such a daring narrative journey is truly exhilarating, and it’s wonderful to witness this recognition. I can’t reveal much more than that. The creators are currently in the process of brainstorming what lies ahead. As they delve deeper into the project, we’ll be sure to share updates. For now, we’re eagerly anticipating their ability to bring this story to its grand, epic conclusion.

As a longtime film industry insider and current executive producer at Netflix, I’ve seen my fair share of documentaries come and go. But when it comes to the recent nominations for this year’s documentary awards, one project stands out to me in particular: “Beckham,” the David Beckham doc.

Additionally, “Griselda’s” achievement was highlighted, resulting in a nomination for Sofia Vergara as lead actress in the limited/anthology series category.

I felt elated and proud seeing Sofia Vergara embrace a drastically different role that truly resonated with her as a passionate project. Her eagerness to tell this story was evident, making it a joy to witness her receive the recognition she deserved for her exceptional performance.

In anticipation of the Emmy Awards in 2025, Netflix executive Bajaria expresses optimism regarding several potential contenders. Among these are “The Perfect Couple,” a series featuring Nicole Kidman, Liev Schreiber, Dakota Fanning, and Eve Hewson. Additionally, the next installment of Ryan Murphy’s “Monster” franchise, titled “Monsters: The Menendez Brothers,” is expected to make an impact. On the comedy front, new shows include “A Classic Spy,” starring Ted Danson, produced by Mike Schur; Kristen Bell’s “Nobody Wants This”; and Chuck Lorre’s sitcom with Leanne Morgan in the lead role.

As a movie buff, I’m always eagerly anticipating new seasons of my favorite shows. Recently, I was thrilled to see the release of Squid Game’s second season and Bridgerton’s third. But now, as we impatiently wait for Season 4 of Bridgerton (still no word on which couple will be featured from Bajaria), Netflix hasn’t given us any confirmation yet regarding a potential Season 5 or beyond.

As a passionate fan of romantic period dramas, I can’t contain my excitement when I hear that there will be more “Bridgerton” coming our way! With each new season, we get to delve deeper into the world of the Bridgertons and their scandalous love stories. I remember binge-watching the first season last year and being completely captivated by the chemistry between Daphne and the Duke of Hastings. The intricate plots, the stunning costumes, and the lively balls were such a delight to behold!

Does that mean the last installment of “Stranger Things,” which is due out in 2025, is what you’re referring to? (No response from the other end of the call.)

“We haven’t set any launch date yet,” Bajaria said.
