If Netflix viewers want to catch the top-earning movie from the Monsterverse, they should hurry up as it will be departing from Netflix on June 14.
In 2024, a monster movie titled “The New Empire” was helmed by Adam Wingard (known for directing “Blair Witch” and “Death Note”), and it serves as the fifth installment in a series. This film is a sequel to the 2021 release, and features an ensemble cast including Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, Dan Stevens, Kaylee Hottle, Alex Ferns, and Fala Chen. In this movie, Kong encounters more of his kind in the center of the Earth (referred to as the Hollow Earth) and teams up with Godzilla to prevent the malevolent Skar King and the formidable frost-breathing Shimo from invading our planet.
Three years post-Mechagodzilla’s downfall, I find myself intrigued by the unique world portrayed in The New Empire. Kong has carved out a domain within the Hollow Earth, while Godzilla continues to uphold law and order on the surface. This captivating narrative delves deeper into the enchanting lore of the Monsterverse, exploring the intriguing histories of the Titans, their origins, and the secrets of Skull Island that have significantly molded them into the iconic beings we know today.
Upon its debut, “The New Empire” drew mixed reviews from critics, with some arguing that a movie that came out four months prior was a better production compared to it. However, defying these criticisms, “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” proved to be a box office sensation, earning over $572 million globally against its production cost of approximately $135-150 million. This film ranked as the eighth highest-grossing movie of 2024 and held the title for the highest-grossing film in the Monsterverse.
Though critics gave a lukewarm reception to “The New Empire,” the audience was overwhelmingly fond of the Monsterverse film. Despite receiving a 54% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, it boasts a “Verified Hot” audience score with a whopping 89% approval rating from more than 5,000 verified viewers. Even with some comparing it to “Godzilla Minus One,” audiences appreciated the thrilling special effects and intense action that have come to be associated with such productions.
In March of 2022, the new movie empire made its debut, having achieved remarkable success at both the box office and streaming platforms during the COVID-19 pandemic with its predecessor, Godzilla vs. Kong. Just two months after the premiere of The New Empire, which performed exceptionally well at the box office, another sequel was announced. Grant Sputore, known for his work on I Am Mother, has been tapped to direct this upcoming film, set for release in 2027.
Godzilla x Kong: Supernova Recently Began Filming

In the upcoming 39th Godzilla movie, we’ll see Kaitlyn Dever from “Justified,” Jack O’Connell known for “Sinners,” Delroy Lindo famous for “Gone in 60 Seconds,” Matthew Modine of “Oppenheimer,” and Sam Neill recognized for “The Hunt for Red October” as part of the star-studded cast. Additionally, Dan Stevens, who previously played Trapper in The New Empire, will return to his role in this film as well.
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is available for streaming on Netflix through June 14.
