Netflix Unveils ‘Stranger Things’ Animated Series, ‘In Your Dreams,’ and More at Annecy Festival

Netflix is set to unveil an exclusive, global preview of “Stranger Things: Tales From ’85” during the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in June.

The upcoming animated series, which takes place within the “Stranger Things” universe, is scheduled to be unveiled by executive producer Eric Robles at the “Next on Netflix Animation” event on June 11th.

“Your Saturday morning cartoons are getting turned upside down,” teased the organizers. 

Although there will be other titles in focus as well, a special presentation featuring unseen footage from the upcoming movie “In Your Dreams,” produced by Kuku Studios and led by director Alex Woo, production designer Steven Pilcher, and VFX supervisor Nicola Lavender, is on the agenda.

Slated for unveiling in fall, “In Your Dreams” is an amusing odyssey that chronicles the escapades of Stevie and her brother Elliot as they traverse the bizarre terrains of their dreams. According to the announcement, if these siblings can endure a sassy toy giraffe, zombified breakfast items, and the ruler of terrors, the Sandman, they will be rewarded with their ultimate wish fulfilled: a flawless family unit.

Under the guidance of co-director Erik Benson, who also penned the script alongside Woo, this production is brought to you by Timothy Hahn and Gregg Taylor.

The upcoming festival will also feature “Fixed,” a freshly obtained adult comedy movie by Genndy Tartakovsky, which tells the story of a canine character who learns about his impending neutering. Eager to experience one final escapade before dawn, he embarks on an adventure.

However, while risqué content is now widely popular and accepted – “In the past, adult animation was primarily limited to ‘The Simpsons’ or perhaps ‘Family Guy'” – the intention was to create a timeless film.

As a movie lover, I’d say it’s reminiscent of classics like “Lady and the Tramp” or “101 Dalmatians,” but with a more mature rating. If you can overlook some adult content, you’ll discover a heartwarming, endearing tale of friendship and romance that is surprisingly sincere.

On August 13th, I’ll be excited to see the release of a production that I’ve been looking forward to – “Fixed.” This brilliant piece is the work of Michelle Murdocca, with Steve Greenberg, Rich Lufrano, Tartakovsky, and Jon Vitti contributing to its script. The talented ensemble cast includes Adam Devine, Idris Elba, Kathryn Hahn, Fred Armisen, Bobby Moynihan, Beck Bennett, Michelle Buteau, and River Gallo. Can’t wait to see it!

At the fest, Netflix won’t be showcasing just one movie; instead, “Astérix & Obélix: The Big Fight” and “Devil May Cry” will compete in the official TV Films contest. Meanwhile, “Mononoke The Movie: Chapter II – The Ashes of Rage” will be featured in the Midnight Specials lineup.

In my perspective, I’m referring to the first installment, initially conceived by Alain Chabat and inspired by the original works of René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo. This production is brought to life by TAT Productions, painting a picture of dire straits. The iconic Gallic village finds itself in peril as their potion master experiences memory loss, leaving the villagers in a precarious position against the overwhelming power of Rome.

In the upcoming second season of “Devil May Cry,” based on Adi Shankar’s interpretation of the well-known Capcom game, dark powers are working to create a gateway connecting our world with the realm of demons. Amidst this chaos stands Dante, a hired demon hunter who was once an orphan.

In “The Ashes of Rage,” which follows after the confrontation in “Mononoke: The Phantom in the Rain,” matters don’t become any less intricate. The Medicine Seller makes another appearance, this time within the secluded Ooku chambers. Here, Otomo Botan, a lady from a noble lineage, takes over from Utayama as the new leader, implementing a leadership style that emphasizes order and equilibrium. This new approach gradually stirs up tension between her and Fuki, an experienced courtesan who previously held exclusive favor with the emperor.

In the midst of the imperial court, as preparations unfold for the appointment of a guardian to care for my empress’s newborn child, an unforeseen twist flips my world on its head. Being labeled the mother of an “undesirable infant,” perceived as a danger, I find myself ensnared in a complex web of machinations orchestrated by those in positions of power.

Kenji Nakamura and Kiyotaka Suzuki serve as directors, with Asumi Atarashi penning the screenplay. Koji Yamamoto takes on the producer’s role.

The narrative titled “One Family’s Journey Through Time” spans the years, delving into the lives of the Schwooper siblings from their childhood to maturity, and then back again. Meanwhile, Corey Campodonico and Alex Bulkley are co-executive producers for ShadowMachine.

Viewers will also catch a sneak peek at Ubisoft’s renowned Tom Clancy game series “Splinter Cell: Deathwatch,” due for release in autumn. This marks the first time this critically acclaimed stealth game has been brought to the big screen, with legendary agent Sam Fisher being lured back into action when a badly injured young operative calls upon his aid.

The French preschool series by Folivari titled “7 Bears” will also receive some focus, as it’s set to give a cozy spin to familiar fairy tales like Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, and Snow White. For the first time ever, Netflix will highlight an Animated Series Studio Spotlight (on June 12) featuring shows like “Dr. Seuss’s Horton” and the second season of “Blue Eye Samurai.” The show “Blue Spirit” is produced by Amber Noizumi and Michael Green, with Maya Erskine, George Takei, Brenda Song, Randall Park, Kenneth Branagh lending their voices.

In addition to “Magic: The Gathering,” “Ghostbusters,” “Minecraft,” and “Haunted Hotel,” the event will be moderated by Netflix Animation leaders John Derderian (VP of Animation Series), Heather Tilert (Director, Kids & Preschool), Billy Wee (Director, Adult Comedy), Dylan Thomas (Director, Adult Spectacle), and Dominique Bazay (Director, Family Spectacle).

2024 stood out as a particularly successful year for Netflix Animation, as evidenced by several prestigious awards. “Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl” was nominated for an Oscar and won two BAFTAs, while “Arcane” took home seven Annie Awards. Additionally, “Orion and the Dark” garnered Children and Family Emmys for its exceptional special production and writing.
