As a cinephile with an extensive background in Scandinavian cinema, I must say that Netflix‘s decision to invest further in Nordic content is music to my ears! The upcoming originals – “Synden”, “Sult”, and season 3 of “Home for Christmas” – promise an exciting blend of crime, drama, comedy, and romance.
Netflix has announced three fresh Nordic productions scheduled for release in 2025, such as the Swedish crime drama “The Sin,” the Danish fertility-themed comedy-drama “Famine,” and season 3 of the Norwegian romantic comedy series “Christmas at Home.” This move underscores Netflix’s commitment to continually expanding its Scandinavian content offerings.
Over the past few years, the Nordic market has faced some turbulence. This is largely due to disagreements in negotiations between Danish content creators and streaming platforms, as well as significant changes at Viaplay that have slowed down locally produced content. Now, part of Viaplay is controlled by France’s Canal+.
Each of the three original productions from the Nordic region, approved by Netflix, have the support of well-known creative minds and producers behind them.
The series “Synden” is helmed by Peter Grönlund, who has worked on productions like “Goliat” and “Beartown.” This show centers around Dani (Krista Kosonen), a consistently irascible yet intellectually sharp investigator, paired with rookie police officer Malik (Mohammed Nour Oklah). They are tasked with probing the grisly murder of a teenager discovered at a farmhouse on the Bjäre peninsula. This case thrusts Dani and Malik into the heart of a long-standing, sinister family conflict that revolves around Elis (Peter Gantman), a patriarchal figure. Previously, Kosonen was featured in “The Midwife” and “Beforeigners.
The modern crime thriller show “Synden” is created by Bonnie Skoog Feeney and Mattias Arehn, under the production of Ninjahuset. Grönlund is taking on the role of executive producer.
Meanwhile, ‘Sulk’ is a production penned and helmed by the renowned Danish comedy duo, Ditte Hansen and Louise Mieritz, known as ‘Ditte & Louise.’ It’s brought to you by Miso Film, the same team responsible for ‘Wallander,’ along with popular Danish TV shows such as ‘Those Who Kill,’ ‘Dicte,’ and ‘1864.’
According to Tine Høeg’s 2022 book, the movie tells the story of Mia, a thriving author who encounters her soulmate in Emil, an endearing single father. However, their bliss is challenged when they discover they can’t conceive naturally and are forced to explore fertility options. The cast features Rosalinde Mynster, Joachim Fjelstrup, Mille Lehfeldt, Sara Fanta Traore, Magnus Haugaard, Magnus Millang, and Sargun Oshana, among others. Jenny Mattesen and Jonas Allen are producing the film titled “Sulk.
Netflix has announced that it will revive the beloved, heartwarming show “Home for Christmas” for a much-awaited third season. It’s been over three years since the second season concluded. In this upcoming season, Ida Elise Broch will reprise her role as Johanne, who is now 35 and single following a split from her boyfriend Jonas six months prior. With family and work keeping her occupied, she takes on a new leadership position at her job, and with newfound courage, dives back into the dating world.
Under the direction of Per-Olav Sørensen, the upcoming third season is written by Siri Seljeseth, Amy Deasismont, Vera Herngren, Mari Ørstavik, and Per-Olav Sørensen himself. This production is handled by Mari Nygaard. The executive producers are Nora Ibrahim, Trond H. Kvernstrøm, and Per-Olav Sørensen. “Home for Christmas” season 3 is brought to you by The Oslo Company and The Global Ensemble Drama.
