Netflix Unveils Korean Film Slate, Including First Animated Feature, for 2025 at Busan

As a dedicated cinephile with a soft spot for Korean cinema, I am absolutely thrilled by Netflix‘s 2025 lineup of Korean films! The diversity and scope of these projects are truly captivating, promising a rollercoaster ride through genres, themes, and timelines.

In 2025, Netflix will be releasing a wide variety of Korean movies on its streaming service, demonstrating the company’s ongoing commitment to Korean content production.

At a gathering alongside the Busan International Film Festival, an array of varied productions were unveiled, kickstarted by Netflix’s “Uprising.” These projects traverse various genres such as action, science fiction, romance, and animation, showcasing both seasoned and up-and-coming Korean filmmakers.

Renowned director Byun Sung-hyun, best known for movies like “The Merciless” and “Kill Boksoon,” is back with his latest project titled “Good News” (tentative name), a gripping 70s-era thriller that revolves around the tense situation of a hijacked airplane. The movie stars Sul Kyung-gu, who has collaborated with Byun on three previous films, alongside Hong Kyung and Ryoo Seung-bum. In this film, Sul assumes the role of a secretive negotiator, while Hong portrays an Air Force officer and Ryoo depicts a government official overseeing a clandestine operation.

As a fan of sci-fi disaster films, I can’t help but be intrigued by “The Great Flood,” a heart-pounding survival story unfolding on the last day of Earth. This masterpiece is the brainchild of director Kim Byung-woo, who has previously impressed us with his work in “The Terror, Live” and “Take Point.” In this movie, we follow the gripping journey of characters portrayed by Kim Da-mi and Park Hae-soo as they bravely strive to rescue a child amidst an unprecedented global flood.

Making its first foray into Korean animated features, Netflix presents “Lost in Starlight.” This space romance is helmed by director Han Ji-won and boasts the vocal talents of Kim Tae-ri and Hong Kyung. The narrative revolves around an astronaut chosen for a mission to Mars, seamlessly blending elements of family, love, and cosmic exploration.

Steering towards teen-focused narratives, the movie titled “Love Untangled,” helmed by Namkoong Sun, takes us back to the year 1998. This heartwarming tale features Gong Myoung, Shin Eun-soo, Cha Woo-min, Youn Sang-hyun and Kang Mi-na. The film delves into the universal experiences of first love and camaraderie, as it follows a high school student’s emotional journey to reveal her feelings for a well-liked classmate.

Titled tentatively as “Mantis,” this upcoming movie serves as an expansion of the universe introduced in “Kill Boksoon.” It revolves around a professional assassin navigating through a tumultuous industry once again. Debut director Lee Tae-sung, along with co-writer Byun Sung-hyun, are set to bring pulse-pounding action scenes and intricate character interactions to the big screen.

In the upcoming movie titled “Revelations,” directors Yeon Sang-ho and Choi Gyu-seok join forces once again. This gripping thriller explores themes of faith and criminal activity. The main characters are played by Ryu Jun-yeol, portraying a pastor guided by divine visions, and Shin Hyun-been as a detective tormented by her history. Both are on separate quests for justice in the investigation of a missing person case.

Completing the roster is “Wall to Wall,” a gripping narrative that unfolds within the limited space of an apartment complex. This film, directed by Kim Tae-joon, who is renowned for generating tension in ordinary surroundings, follows Kang Ha-neul’s character as his dream of homeownership turns into a nightmare. Yeom Hye-ran and Seo Hyun-woo join the cast, enriching the tale that delves into financial hardships and unsettling occurrences.
