As a film enthusiast with a penchant for international cinema, especially those hailing from South Korea, I am absolutely thrilled by Netflix‘s ambitious lineup of Korean films set to debut in 2025! Having witnessed the extraordinary growth and diversity of Korean cinema over the years, it is truly heartening to see Netflix continue to invest significantly in this vibrant industry.

2025 will see a wide variety of Korean movies making their debut on Netflix, underscoring the company’s ongoing commitment to Korean productions by featuring them on its streaming service.

At a special gathering connected to the Busan International Film Festival, a wide array of upcoming films were unveiled, with Netflix’s “Uprising” serving as the festival’s opener. These projects cover various genres such as action, sci-fi, romance, and animation. They showcase both seasoned professionals and rising stars within the Korean film industry.

Renowned director Byun Sung-hyun, recognized for his movies “The Merciless” and “Kill Boksoon,” is back with a new project titled “Good News” (tentative title), a gripping 1970s thriller revolving around the plot of a hijacked airplane. The cast includes Sul Kyung-gu, who teams up with Byun for their fourth joint production, alongside Hong Kyung and Ryoo Seung-bum. In this film, Sul assumes the character of a secretive fixer, while Hong portrays an Air Force lieutenant and Ryoo plays a government official supervising a clandestine operation.

In the realm of science fiction disasters, “The Great Flood” offers an edge-of-your-seat survival tale unfolding on Earth’s last day. This film is under the direction of Kim Byung-woo, known for his work on “The Terror, Live” and “Take Point.” Starring Kim Da-mi and Park Hae-soo, the movie revolves around their struggle to rescue a child amidst a catastrophic worldwide flood.

Making its first stride into Korean animation, “Lost in Starlight” is Netflix’s inaugural Korean animated feature. Helmed by director Han Ji-won, this space-themed romance boasts the vocal skills of Kim Tae-ri and Hong Kyung. The narrative revolves around an astronaut chosen for a mission to Mars, blending elements of family, love, and extraterrestrial exploration.

Steering towards youthful stories, “Love Untangled,” helmed by Namkoong Sun, takes viewers on a trip to 1998. Featuring Gong Myoung, Shin Eun-soo, Cha Woo-min, Youn Sang-hyun and Kang Mi-na, this film delves into the realms of first love and camaraderie, focusing on a high school student’s journey to express her affection for a well-liked classmate.

Title tentatively named “Mantis” continues the universe introduced in “Kill Boksoon,” focusing on a skilled assassin’s reentry into a tumultuous profession. This film marks Lee Tae-sung’s first directorial effort, with Byun Sung-hyun contributing to its screenplay. Expect thrilling action scenes and intricate character relationships in this production.

Collaborators Yeon Sang-ho and Choi Gyu-seok team up once more for the suspenseful film titled ‘Revelations’. This movie explores themes of faith and criminality. In this story, Ryu Jun-yeol portrays a pastor motivated by divine visions, while Shin Hyun-been takes on the role of a detective tormented by her past. Both characters are on separate quests for justice in a missing persons case.

Completing the roster is “Wall to Wall,” an intriguing thriller that unfolds within the limited space of an apartment complex. This film, directed by Kim Tae-joon who is renowned for his ability to generate tension in ordinary surroundings, follows Kang Ha-neul as a man whose aspiration of home ownership spirals into a nightmare. Yeom Hye-ran and Seo Hyun-woo are also part of the cast, contributing to the narrative about financial hardships and unsettling oddities.
