Netflix Unveils 2024 ‘Made in Argentina’ Lineup: Beloved Comic Strip Character Mafalda Gets Series Treatment, Ricardo Darín Touts Drama ‘The Eternaut’

As a cinephile with a keen eye for storytelling and character development, I find myself utterly captivated by the upcoming releases on our screens this September. From the gritty realism of “En el barrio” to the fantastical adventures of “El hombre que amaba los platos voladores,” there’s something for everyone.

Buenos Aires – Mafalda, the cherished and clever six-year-old character created by renowned Argentine artist Quino, will make her transition from comics to screen with socially aware antics. The news of this adaptation, led by Academy Award-winner Juan José Campanella, was revealed on Monday evening during Netflix’s presentation of their 2024 ‘Argentina Productions’, which excited a lively gathering of industry and media professionals.

I’m involved in a Netflix Original series where I’ll be serving as the director, producer, and showrunner. Gastón Gorali, who will co-write the script, is also on board as the general producer. Sergio Fernández takes up the role of production director. This project is being produced by Netflix, along with Campanella and Gorali’s Mundoloco CGI studio, known for creating “Metegol,” the largest Latin American animated production to date.

“According to Campanella’s July declaration, Mafalda and her companions not only provided plenty of laughter but also occasionally left me scratching my head to look up words in a dictionary. Each new term I deciphered brought on another bout of laughter.”

“We feel it’s crucial to maintain the wit, humor, irony, and insights found in Quino’s work. While Mafalda’s greatness cannot be surpassed, we hope that those who have loved her since the beginning can pass on this joy to their children. Even if some jokes are meant for adults, we aspire to share laughter as a family. Occasionally, maybe we’ll even find ourselves consulting the dictionary together.”

Led by actor Darío Barassi, host of the upcoming reality show “Love Island Argentina”, sneak peeks were given to various anticipated productions. These included Bruno Stagnaro’s graphic novel adaptation “El Eternauta,” starring Ricardo Darín, two projects by Daniel Burman, and a sequel to “El marginal,” titled “En el barro.” This last one focuses on the lives of women in prison, serving as a gritty counterpart to “Orange is the New Black.”

Adrian Suar’s title “I Can’t Live Without You” and Griselda Siciliani’s production “Envious” both released trailers, featuring their main characters, providing a tantalizing glimpse for viewers.

Addressing the tenacity that fueled the creation of “The Eternaut,” Darín, present in the gathering, commented, “This was a collaborative effort of many, requiring determination, passion. We endured long and arduous days, as is often the case with such projects.”

Moving forward, I’m excited about this upcoming story adaptation as it seems meticulously planned, inspired by ‘The Eternaut.’ I think it will be something we can be proud of, potentially opening doors to imagine more projects with comparable qualities and ambitions. It’s a grand endeavor, indeed, which understandably stirs some apprehension.

Paco Ramos, Netflix’s Vice President for Content in Latin America, expressed that it will be a “significant undertaking for the audiovisual sector in Argentina and Latin America.” He noted that the dedication, diligence, ambition, and care displayed by each team member is truly inspiring. The effort being put into this project is commendable.

The occasion was held at Centro Cultural San Martin, a well-known arts center nestled within the downtown theater district and a staunch advocate for local cinema, following tough government measures aimed at reducing financial support from the state for the nation’s audiovisual industry. With INCAA suffering significant losses this year and Ventana Sur moving to Montevideo, Uruguay after being based in Buenos Aires for many years, Netflix aims to entice audiences deeper into Argentina’s rich artistic pool under its “Made in Argentina” label.

The broadcaster may struggle under the weight of single-handedly supporting the entire industry, yet the occasion brought a glimmer of optimism that every project on the schedule could stimulate curiosity in the vast pool of Argentine talent, brimming with diverse and distinctive stories, easily adaptable to various markets.

About a year and a half back, we gathered here and shared numerous projects with everyone. Now, those very same projects have come to fruition. A few of them are already operational, like ‘Descansar en Paz’ and ‘Goyo,’ as pointed out by Ramos.

Today, we’re currently working on approximately 20 diverse productions, ranging from series, documentaries, movies, and a special presentation by our host this evening. To clarify, this indicates our continued investment in Argentina, and we have no plans of slowing down.

Preparing to exhibit a diverse range of emerging and polished talents from across the country, our network boasts 19 upcoming projects in the pipeline.
