I’m thrilled to be part of the chorus celebrating Netflix’s generous gesture towards Brazilian cultural heritage! In a groundbreaking step, they’ve pledged BRL 5 million ($875,000) for the restoration, modernization, and expansion of the Brazilian Cinematheque. As a pioneer, Netflix is the first private entity to contribute to this project since its reopening in 2022, marking their significant role in revitalizing this historic institution.
The donations will be utilized for the refurbishment of Sala Oscarito, the Cinematheque’s initial screening room located at its present premises, which was first opened in 1997. This overhaul aims to bring the venue in line with current legal requirements, improve the technical facilities, and install a sophisticated climate control system, thus ensuring accessibility and cutting-edge technology.
Elisabetta Zenatti, VP of content at Netflix Brazil, expressed delight about being part of the restoration of a significant location in the history of Brazilian film. She believes that safeguarding audiovisual heritage is crucial for maintaining Brazil’s culture vibrant, allowing future generations to recognize and value our cinematic wealth. Netflix has consistently backed and plans to keep backing national cinema, pouring resources into technology, facilities, and most importantly, narratives that embody the variety and skill of our nation.
The collaboration is taking place under the terms of the Rouanet Law, which represents a new step for Netflix in utilizing Brazil’s incentive system for culture and the arts and audiovisual industry within the country.
Maria Dora Mourão, director of the Brazilian Cinematheque, emphasized the importance of this action: “Modernizing Sala Oscarito is a crucial step in reviving the Brazilian Cinematheque. This initiative not only safeguards our audiovisual legacy but also reaffirms the Cinematheque as a leading space for film and audiovisual presentations.
The Sala Oscarito renovation is just a part of the larger plan for our cinematheque. This comprehensive project involves masonry repairs, advancements in climate control within research and technical zones, improved landscaping, and making our facilities more accessible. Approximately BRL 30 million ($5.2 million) is expected to be required to fully restore and upgrade these areas.
This initiative is connected to Viva Cinemateca, a program that started in 2023 with the aim of preserving important collections such as nitrate film reels and the Canal 100 archive. The project has also provided exhibitions and film screenings in more than 20 cities across Brazil.

In light of the growing importance of public-private partnerships for cultural conservation, the Cinematheque is constantly looking for corporate and personal benefactors. Additionally, support can be offered through the Friends of the Cinematheque initiative, which allows for donations.
This contribution strengthens Netflix’s continuous dedication to Brazilian narrative and audiovisual legacy, underscoring its function not only as a content supplier, but also as a cultural benefactor.
