Netflix Sparks Outcry After Non-Renewal of ‘Palestinian Stories Collection’ Launched in 2021

As a long-time follower of diverse stories from around the globe, I find Netflix‘s recent decision to remove 19 films from their “Palestinian Stories” collection deeply disheartening. Having had the privilege to immerse myself in these unique narratives, they offered a valuable perspective that enriched my understanding and appreciation for the complexities of Palestinian life.

As a devoted cinephile, I’ve been following the recent controversy surrounding Netflix. It seems they’ve faced criticism from various human rights organizations due to their decision not to renew 19 movies that once formed part of their “Palestinian Stories” collection, which was introduced in October last year.

These movies are set to leave Netflix’s service as the rights, obtained through their licensing agreement, expire at the end of this month. Similar circumstances led to the disappearance of “Friends” from US streaming and “Mr. Robot” from Arabic-speaking regions.

The streamer still has titles by Palestinian creators on its service.

Freedom Forward, a human rights group, expressed serious worry over Netflix removing at least 19 movies created by or centered around Palestinian filmmakers or narratives within the past week.

As a movie enthusiast, I’ve noticed that the “Palestinian Stories” section on Freedom Forward now only features one film available for streaming. It’s troubling to see that Netflix has seemingly removed most of its Palestinian films without providing a clear explanation. This decision has sparked widespread concern and dismay among thousands of people worldwide, who have voiced their opinions through social media platforms.

Titles that no longer have copyright protection are “Giraffada” by Rania Massalha, “Mars at Sunrise” by Jessica Habie, and “Chronicle of a Disappearance” by Elia Suleiman.

Netflix announced the release of their licensed movie collection back in 2021, which will last for a span of three years,” (in a concise announcement).

The licenses for those productions are no longer valid. Just as before, we consistently pour resources into an array of top-tier movies and series that cater to our subscribers’ preferences, while showcasing diverse global perspectives,” concluded the streaming titan.

The Freedom Forward letter bears the signatures of various organizations including the Arab American Action Network, Council on American-Islamic Relations, Muslim Anti-Racism Collaborative, National Network for Arab American Communities, and U.S. Palestinian Community Network, as well as several others.
