As a seasoned film enthusiast with a penchant for gritty dramas that delve into the underbelly of society, I am utterly thrilled about Netflix’s new U.K. series, “Legends.” The fact that it’s based on a true story makes it even more intriguing!
Netflix has approved the production of a new UK drama, penned by “The Gold” showrunner Neil Forsyth, which is inspired by an astonishing true tale about a group of Customs officers who secretly joined forces with British drug cartels’ deadliest enemies to dismantle them.
Entitled “Legends,” this six-episode series delves into an exhilarating crime investigation, drawing upon Forsyth’s comprehensive research and conversations with key participants.
“During the peak of the global war on drugs in the 1990s, Her Majesty’s Customs and Excise, responsible for securing Britain’s borders, found themselves struggling against drug trafficking. In response, they devised an unusual tactic: a covert operation involving a select group of their own employees. Their objective was to blend in with Britain’s most formidable drug cartels.”
“These individuals weren’t professional spies, they hadn’t operated undercover before. Instead, they were average citizens, selected from everyday lives across the U.K., given a basic training and instructed to create new personas within the criminal underground. These personas were known as ‘Legends.'”
Under the auspices of Tannadice Pictures, a venture by Forsyth, the upcoming project will be brought to life. Joining Forsyth as executive producers are Ben Farrell, known for “The Gold,” and Richard Bradley from Lion Television. Charlie Leech, who has worked on “The Gold,” takes on the producer role.
“Forsyth expressed great enthusiasm about sharing this extraordinary tale, joined by everyone at Tannadice Pictures,” he said. “In my opinion, ‘Legends’ is an intriguing, captivating British story that warrants a complete telling. I am thrilled that Netflix has agreed to bring it to life.”
Mona Qureshi, director of UK content at Netflix, expressed: “We were thrilled by the opportunity to bring Neil’s ‘The Gold’ creator’s extraordinary tale, ‘Legends,’ to life. This series takes us back to 1990s Britain, a time when the government was struggling in its fight against the global war on drugs. Neil’s script introduces an engaging group of characters, and their surprising forays into the treacherous world of undercover operations set the stage for a suspenseful, action-packed series that honors the finest traditions of British crime dramas. We eagerly await ‘Legends’ premiering on Netflix.”
